This tale must begin with my dear friend Melissa (aka "Fiver"), who was diagnosed with Lou Gerhig's Disease, or ALS, just before her 35th birthday. ALS is a hideous, vicious disease that gradually but relentlessly deprives its victims of all voluntary and involuntary muscle reaction, eventually resulting in death. And if there's ever a person in the world who DID NOT DESERVE to be afflicted with something like ALS, it's Fiver. I could give you easily a hundred reasons why, but the short version is just that she's Good Folks, and you don't find many like her any more.
So for obvious reasons, most of Fiver's friends now support the ALS Association of Georgia (Mel's home state). The organization not only works to fund research into causes and treatments, but it also provides invaluable support for patients, particularly in loans of equipment that can improve the patient's quality of life. One of the organization's main fundraising events is a 5K walk that takes place in November each year. Fiver's Team was one of the top three fundraisers in 2008, their first year participating, and they're hoping to make a similar showing this year.
You know what's coming: I'm about to hit you up for money. But there's something in it for you, too, if you want to play along for a Very Good Cause.
Here's the deal: For every $5 you contribute to Fiver's Team, I will write you 500 words of fiction, with the characters of your choice, on the topic of your choice. $10 will get 1,000 words, $20 will get 2,000 words, etc. etc. The universes I know well enough to write sensibly are LotR, Castle, and Forever Knight, but I can probably do Faculty, Hooligans, and *possibly* Firefly/Serenity passably. I can also do LotR RPF if you're nuts enough to want to read the result. Gen is fine. Slash is fine. Even het is fine. I'm flexible. :-)
I have to add this one caveat: I've been sick as a dog for most of this year, and things don't show signs of improving very much, so I can't guarantee lightning-fast turnarounds; but I'm good for a promise, so you WILL eventually get what you've paid for.
If you want to play, leave me a comment here, or email me: elycia@livejournal.com. The link to the fundraising page for Fiver's Team is
here. Since Elycia isn't my real name (duh), I'm not on the member list, so you can make your donation to the "General Team Donation" at the top of the list.
Thanks in advance. Melissa has always been our Frodo in LotR costume events, so this is indeed "For Frodo."
