In honor of those braver than me

Memorial Day was today in the US. So naturally, I wrote a Potter drabble, 300something words.

I know Rememberance Day is in November for the UK, but, what do you want from a Yank. I wrote this after 20 seconds of research on wikipedia about Rememberance Day.

In any event, it's set in the same universe as Don't Hold Back, which is, of course, a part of belovedranger's Clean Sweep universe. It would help to read it first, but it almost stands alone.

The war was terrible. Untold atrocities were visited upon those who had no desire other than to live their lives free of tyranny and oppression. Friends shielded each other and mothers wept for children lost far too young.

But in the end, war is only a fleeting thing. Those who desire peace always fought harder for what they wanted. It was their courage that lifted the darkness and brought the dawn.

It had been ten years. A long time. Time enough for most people to forget, save those few whose lives were changed forever.

A young man with messy black hair and glasses stood beneath the tree, staring at the white stone. His tears obscured his vision, but he still knew the simple inscription by heart. It seemed a lifetime ago he stood here, looking for the words to express his feelings.

Things had a funny way of coming full circle, because he was here again, at a loss for words. But this time, he wasn’t alone.

“Harry.”

Her voice was soft and compassionate, helping to ease the ache in his heart.

“Why don’t you introduce her?”

His wife handed him the sleeping newborn. The moment he took hold of the baby, the warmth seemed to spread throughout his whole body, and bringing a genuine smile to his face. It finally allowed him to speak.

“Mum… Dad… this is your granddaughter. She’s perfect, just like her mum and her gran. She has your hair too. She’s going to be a great beauty. We… we’ve named her Poppy. I wish you could have seen her.”

At that moment, a lark began to sing, and was soon joined by several more. The beautiful bird song seemed to come from all around, and for one perfect moment, they were all that existed in the world.

The woman pulled close to her husband, and planted a kiss on her daughter’s forhead.

“I think they can see her Harry.”

Also, since I have a feeling it vanished from people's F-List fairly quickly, I'd like to refer people back to the Latest Debate Topic. I would like to hear what all you ladies think, since you all rawk, with a capital ARRR!
