I've recently added a few people to my f-list. In case I haven't said it personally to anyone: Hello, and thank you for adding me. If you've just added me, or if we've been friends for a while and you don't know much about me, here's quite a bit of me talking about my favorite subject: ME!
Hello Hello. My name is Rishi. I'm a 24 year old Graduate Student in Mechanical Enginering at San Jose State University. I live in my childhood home in San Ramon, CA (a small suburb 45 minutes east of San Francisco) with my mother and sister. I graduated with B.S.s (the degree mind you, although I did put an awful lot of B.S. into some of my homework) in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering in 2004. Since that time, I have been working at my first real job for a Control Systems firm here in the Bay Area for the past 2 years before going back to school this past semester.
I am religious, Non-Denominational Evengelical Christian to be somewhat precise. My family doesn't share my beliefs, and that makes things interesting at times. I could try to articulate my beliefs, but the writings of the likes of C.S. Lewis and Dietrich Bonhoffer do it much better than I ever could, although you may occasionally hear my try on my LJ. Religion is very important to me, and since I'm an Evangelical, you may occasionally hear me sound preachy. It's because it's so important to me, and it colors the way I view the world so much that I can't help but do it. That being said, it is a dialogue. It's near impossible to offend me. I have pretty thick skin. Please tell me what you think and feel and believe. I don't know everything. I just talk like I do!
A good deal of people on this list are probably here through some involvement in Harry Potter Fandom. I too am a Potter Fiend, although it probably only ranks about 4th or 5th on my fandom list. Potter is just the one I really do anything for, and I'll try and explain that. Tied in first and second spot are Narnia and Middle Earth. Other than the fact that these are simply superbly written books, they also help to articulate my beliefs. I don't really do too much fandom stuff for these because, in my mind, they stand alone as definitive works, and I don't want to add to them. I like them just the way they are. Probably tied in 3rd and 4th place is Potter, along with the world of Star Trek (and no, Enterprise NEVER happened, you hear!). I've dropped out of the Trek-verse a bit, just because nothing's happened for a very long time, at least since the end of Voyager. And I was already losing interest about midway through that. There just wasn't much to hold on too, but I still love reruns. Potter is current, and in progress and incomplete. That makes it really easy to jump in and contribute. Plus, the internet is a lot bigger nowadays. Hence, I can indulge a fandom a bit more than say, 10 years back when I was really really into Trek.
I have 2 big hobbies in life, Ultimate Frisbee and Magic: The Gathering. Both of which my college roommates introduced me to. I could not throw a frisbee straight to save my life my Freshman year of college. One of the guys in my dorm (with whom I would share an apartment the next 3 years) played pretty avidly, and introduced the rest of us to The Other Beautiful Game. It's a passion that quickly grew. I even played a year on the B-Team in college. I still play, time permitting, at least once a week, and intend to keep on playing until my legs fail me. Another of my roommates (one of six, all of us lived in the same dorm freshman year and moved out together) introduced me to the game of Magic, a collectible card game. It quickly became an addiction. I own over 140 decks now. It's a disease really, cardboard crack. If any of you know
alloy_ and have heard him talk about his addiction to comic books, I'm pretty that much way with Magic.
Sports are of course HUGE in any man's life. I'm no different. I grew up in the Bay Area in the '80s. That means I got to watch some great teams. The 49ers of Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Bill Walsh and company. They stink these days, for a variety of reasons. I keep maintaining that I hate football, and that I've given up on the Niners, but somehow, for 3 hours every Sunday, I still end up wearing red and parked on the couch. Also, growing up in the '80s here meant The Oakland A's of Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, Dave Stewart, Dennis Eckersley, Rickey Henderson and Tony LaRussa. Then Baseball went on strike in '94. I never really came back. Basketball... well the Warriors stink. Always have, probably always will. Still, the '80s was the time of Michael Jordan. Then he retired. I never really came back after that either. Now Hockey, there's a game! And the San Jose Sharks are pretty good. You will hear me squee quite often about my guys in teal. Soccer, well, we had a team, then they moved to Houston. Too bad, they were pretty good. It's sad, really. Any given week, I stand a better chance of seeing a game from England than I do from here stateside. So, that being said, I follow the English Premier League quite closely. Liverpool is my team because I'm a filthy bandwagonner, and because I have a soul, and therefore can not root for Man U. or Chelsea. Although, my dad went to college at Newcastle Upon Tine, so I have a soft spot for the Magpies (now if they could win a game or two, that soft spot might grow).
Relationshipwise, I'm single, always have been. I was the skinny, scrawny, nerdy kid growing up. That doesn't do much for your chances of getting noticed or building your confidence with the opposite sex, and it just gets worse as you get older. Also, dating was a bit of a closed subject, at least in high school, because my mom and I don't have the best relationship. It was pretty much fight for the right to drive, or the right to date. I chose the car. For now, it's for the better because I know I'm not emotionally mature enough to be in a relationship. Hopefully, I can do some growing up and things will get better. Also, I have a hard time getting along with women. In a room full of strangers and new people, I'm much more likely to be able to hit of a conversation with a group of guys than with a group of women. Probably related to less pressure, more common ground and whatnot. So, yeah, lots more growing up to do.
If you've read any of my posts or comments, you probably realize that I'm a bit of a smartass. There's a reason Michelangelo is my default user pic. I don't take life very seriously. Pizza fixes everything, and Calvin and Hobbes probably have the best outlook on life. A good day is sleeping in, having pancakes for breakfast, playing some Ultimate, and kicking back with a soak in the hot tub. The day would be perfect if the hot tub included Brazilian Lingerie Models, but one can't get greedy.
Well, if you've read this far without running off and hiding under the bed, welcome. I think we might just manage to not murder each other. Have a nice day!
