'Verse Sailormoon
Pairing: Usagi/Mamoru
Prompt:

Chiba Mamoru sees the little boy and the little girl playing on the tire swing. They are no older than him, and on the surface, not so different. But a deeper look reveals just how very different these children are, and his deep blue eyes miss nothing. The children are well dressed in smart new clothes, very unlike his twice-mended hand me downs. They are well fed, eating when and how they wish. They do not have to wait for set mealtimes with scant plates. And most importantly, he can see their parents watching on the other side of the playground.

Chiba Mamoru enjoys none of these things. Life in the orphanage is hard on a young boy, particularly one such as him who has no memory of life before. All he has known is the ratty clothes, the too hard beds, the meager meals and the long nights filled with the tearful dreams of the other children.

He sees the two on the swing and he knows how the story will go. They will be close always, until they grow a bit older and must grow apart for a time. They may try to deny their feelings, but eventually, they will find their way back to each other, just like in all the stories.

He knows all the stories. They are what sustain him through the dark times. They are what give him hope that things can end differently than they do in his dreams, and that the woman he sees will stay with him, and that maybe some day, he can have things like new clothes and large meals and a family that loves him.

Today is not that day though. The field trip to the park may have been meant to give the orphans a sense of normalcy, but for Mamoru, it only highlights just how different he is. He leaves the park for the children who have a future, and whose dreams are free from car crashes and sad blue eyes.

Tuxedo Mask sees the old couple on the swing. They laugh freely, much like the children they seem to be pretending to be. But in their eyes, he can see the truth. In their eyes are the memories of many happy years together. The way their hands meet, it is as though they can always find each other, no matter how far they’ve strayed from each other, or how long they’ve been apart. They embrace as those who have lived through all of life’s trials and tribulations and have always come through together, stronger.

Tuxedo Mask wishes he had the luxury of such things. He is meant to fight for love, and yet it remains elusive for him. His dreams remain sad. The woman remains just beyond his reach. All he can see are those tearful blue eyes looking back at him, silently asking.

Find me

Save me

Love me

He knows if he could just find her, it would all be better. She would tell him who he was and why he was seeking her. Then he would know who she was, and why he loved her.

He would know their story. About how they fell in love, and how they were separated, and then fought so hard to find their way back to each other so they could live happily ever after and some day grow old and kiss on the swings.

Until then, he would have to keep fighting. He would stop the youma who threatened the city, and the other people who deserved to kiss on the swings and grow old together. He would stop Beryl, and help Sailor Moon, as long as it didn’t stop him from finding Her. Finding her was all that mattered, and he would, or die trying.

For now, the couple kissing on the swing was safe, and that’s the way it was meant to be. They deserved to stay there, kissing. He would leaved them, and chase the wicked things into the shadows, so that everyone else could kiss under the sun.

***

Kind Endymion sees the couple kissing in the park. Of all the Senshi who might reconcile, any who knew their history would scarcely have believed that Rei might be the first to find forgiveness in her heart. Jadeite certainly never would have, and so every time they kissed, he laughed, almost not believing his own luck.

Love was funny that way. It worked in ways no one could possibly imagine. So many awful things could happen. So much pain endured, so much suffering. And then, from somewhere deep in the heart, a memory would surface. Something simple. A flower left on a bench. A note, scented with perfume. A smile across the room. A kiss on a swing.

And suddenly, all the awful things in the world fell away, and all that remained were the beautiful things.

Rei and Jadeite continued on, unaware of their audience. And that was the way love was supposed to be. It did not worry what others thought or what had come before. All it cared was that tomorrow would come, and it would be better than today.

Endymion could remember a time when such thoughts were beyond him. Orphan Chiba Mamoru never knew such things. And for all his long winded speeches spouting lofty ideals, Tuxedo Mask didn’t know such things either.

No, it was in the arms of his Usako that Endymion knew such things. Yes, she went by Queen Serenity now, but she always was and would be Usako, the silly girl who wanted to pig out at the Crown, go shopping, and see the whole world just as happy as she always seemed to be, no matter how bad things were.

Maybe it was because of her that cold, proud Rei had opened her broken heart to love again. And maybe it was because of her that love had healed that broken heart so completely.

Endymion knew something of Rei. They had much in common. And perhaps once, they had both seen something of themselves in each other and sworn themselves to Usagi’s side, hoping that she could have all the things they never thought they could. And in doing so, they had found it for themselves.

So Endymion left the happy couple to their swing. Every couple in love deserved a swing to kiss on, and he was happy to leave them to theirs. Endymion had much more wonderful things. He had a home to go to, and in that home was a wife and a daughter, and a future in which he could grow old and kiss under the sun on a swing with the woman he loved.
