Toffs, Nazis and Scary Religous People

There are terrible things that happen in this country every day. Terrible things that we as citizens would be entirely justified in being outraged about. The number of homeless people in the UK. The number of children living in poverty. Human trafficking to the UK for a life of slavery and prostitution. So many things, in fact, that it is a wonder that we are not all in a permanent state of apoplexy. And yet… what is it that stirs the outrage of a nation and fills the news media? Jerry Springer and Prince Harry.

A useless ginger toff wears a Nazi uniform to a fancy dress party and the whole world goes crazy. Two solid days of news coverage so far and counting. Breakfast on BBC 1 this morning read out an outraged email form someone in Texas, US of A. This is utterly bizarre and profoundly depressing. Do you know what a real outrage is? My taxes are paying for the useless toff, and the useless toff’s useless family to live a useless life.

Maybe it’s a cry for help from Harry. He looks into his future and sees a life of playing golf and shagging sloanes and has decided to do what he can to bring down the monarchy, so that he can just have a normal life. I’d feel sorry for him if he didn’t have a live jam packed with privilege.

As for those of you who felt the need to complain.. go and see The Producers - they have a whole section of tap dancing Nazis. Maybe that will be enough to make your head explode and put you out of my misery.

As for the ‘Jerry Springer - The Opera’ farce…. This whole episode is wrong in so many different ways that I can barely contain myself. Seems like 50,000 people complained without having seen it. Then a whole load more, having heard all the furore and knowing they would be offended, watched it anyway and then complained about it. Not only did none of them remember that they could just TURN IT OFF, not only have none of them ever heard of satire, not only did none of them actually understand that what was being satirised was the type of television that Springer represents… but they then want to impose their views on me. Scary Religious People of the world, throw your televisions away, wear blindfolds and ear plugs and work on inventing that time machine that will take you back to that lovely repressed Victorian era.. and stay there.
