FOR ROB
Taken from 'The Alchemist', by Paulo Coelho
The boy wanted to take her hand. But Fatima's hands held to the handle of the jug(...)
''That is why I want you to continue toward your goal. Go in pursuit of your dream. The dunes are changed by the wind, but the desert never changes. That's the way it'll be with our love for each other'', she said. ''I am a (free) woman, and I'm proud of that. I want my husband to wander as free as that wind that shapes the dunes.''
The boy turns to the alchemist and wise man for advice on whether to continue to Egypt, or stay and marry Fatima.
''Fatima is a woman of the desert'', the alchemist said. ''She knows men have to go away in order to return. And she already has her treasure: it's you. Now she expects you to find what it is you're looking for.''
'' Well, what will happen if I stay?''
''Let me tell you what will happen'', said the alchemist. ''You will become the counselor of the oasis. You will have enough gold to buy many camels and sheep. You will marry Fatima, and be happy for a year. And you'll get better and better at understanding omens.
Sometime during the second year, you will remember about the treasure and Egypt. The omens will speak of it, and you'll try to ignore them. Your camels will bring you weatlth and power, as you concentrate more on the matters of the oasis.
During the third year, the omens will continue to speak of the treasures and your destiny. You'll walk around night after night at the oasis, and Fatima will be unhappy because she'll feel it was she who interrupted your quest. But you will not blame her. But many times you'll walk the sands of the desert, thinking that maybe you could have left... that you could have trusted more in the love of Fatima. At that point, the omens will tell you that your treasure is buried forever.
You'll spend the rest of your days knowing that you didn't pursue your destiny, and that now it's too late.
''You must understand that love never keeps a man from pursuing his destiny. If he abandons that pursuit, it's because it wasn't true love.''
You should really read dat book.
