In the mood for something dark, but not shippy?

I stumbled across this last month, I think, and I loved it. Although the ending escaped me a bit initially (whether that has to do with the fic being so convoluted, or just general thickness on my part, I can't say), once I read a few bits of it over, I got it and was awed. It's very dark - and pretty long for a one-shot, but definitely worth the read.
The characterizations are great - which I adore - even when you only get snippets of the characters themselves. Go see for yourself!
