Anime: Kino's Journey - III

I watched this DVD of the Kino's Journey series this weekend. This series proves that I can be a story snob, I must admit. I highly recommend watching the subtitled version on the DVD, rather than listening to the dubbed version. I watched it in the subtitled version first and couldn't actually finished the dubbed ones, as it was making me wince from the story changes. None of those changes were for the better. The subtly of word choice is far more elegant in the subtitles.

The three episodes for this DVD seem to wind back towards the roots of what occurred in the first four episodes. These stories were coming back to the commentary on different aspects of society that can go wrong when taken to an extreme. Land of Wizards is a first for the series in that it isn't really told by Kino and Kino isn't really the main character. It's not as creepy as some of the stories, but more about the fight for ones ideas in the face of doubt. Land of Books is back to the creepier side of things, bringing the view to question reality and what they just saw. Mechanical Dolls is one that I figured out well before the story told me, but that didn't diminish the slightly chilling side of "what do people need from each other".

This series is excellent, though. DVD 2 is easily not my favorite since it doesn't seem to fit as well with the tales told in 1 and 3.
