This DVD I watched twice. The first time, last weekend, I didn't really get into it. It just didn't grab me the way the first DVD set did. I figured that maybe it was my mood at the time, so I waited for a second re-watching. The culprit may have been something else.
The first DVD, I had the subtitles on and was listening to the English. Mind you, the text variances are subtle but do occur. On the second DVD, I just listened to the English. To replay them, I switched it to Japanese with English subtitles. Some of the variances occurred again... and I think they may have harmed some of the dialogue. In fact, I know it altered one of the ending discussions enough to be a little cheesy, almost. Thus, I would recommend the subtitles -- even though they can flip by rather fast at times.
The three episodes on this set didn't have quite the depressing vibe that the first four had. The first was a little "sad", but the futility of things didn't really depress me in the same ways that the first few stories did. The second and third episodes are a two-parter that was just a bit on the creepy side, but didn't seem to have the same philosophical bend that the others had to that point. There was some - involving the path of history and death - but it just didn't seem as strong as the others. It was still a good story (don't get me wrong), but I felt the first DVD had stories that were a little stronger.
The art, however, continues to be really pretty, no matter how creepy or dark the story goes.
