An Olympic Rant

Before I embark on my dissertation work for the day, I have something to say about the Olympics and the medal attitude.

I'm sorry but I disagree. It's fine to strive for gold, I fully accept that that is what we should be doing and trying our best - I made the point that is what the Olympics is about. I just think we should be more gracious in defeat and not stand on the podium looking pissed off and upset because that reflects really badly on us as a country. We need to learn to accept that Silver is a bloody good achievement too.

America has a better attitude in that no matter what small achievement someone makes, they shout and sing and dance about it and about how great that achievement is. I think it's important to cultivate such an attitude
because that's true team support - through thick and thin - as opposed to the villainisation I've seen some athletes subjected to because they missed out on something.

The reason we're failing to qualify isn't because of the 'winning isn't everything' attitude, it's because kids simply don't want to do sport. I think it's more important to encourage them to get into sports that they might not normally have the opportunity to get into rather than the popular ones.
