You know, I was going to write a really long rant here about fanwank in the Doctor Who fandom, but you know what? I'm not. Because thinking about it, I've realised, what people online think doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. It won't affect what happens on the show, and will only negatively affect what people think of the fans. RTD has already stated he won't bend to the whims of online fans as they only represent a specific part of the audience which is true and I'm glad he won't. He has made the new Who awesome and I trust that he isn't going to screw it up now.
I'm a fan of the show because of the show and the premise, not just because of the companions and the underlying entanglements that lie within. Because while they can add to the story and I do like them, it's not just about that.
We don't know how the BIG casting spoiler is going to play out, who says it's going to be the future/same timeline version? There are elements of that character's back history which could point to other things. But you know, I don't mind, I'm just happy she's coming back. I liked her character. (And sorry to disappoint, but I'm an adult, not some immature tween.) I liked Martha too, I just thought her character suffered from the Rose comparison.
My only complaint I have with Who really is the fanwank and the apparent current theme of having to have Ten kiss everyone going and the female companions must LOVE HIM. For the most part, I can understand the motivations but it does get old.
... Whoops, this turned into a rant anyway. There go my good intentions. ;)
This isn't meant to offend people, it is ultimately my opinion, I'm not going to force it on you, and feel free to debate with me on it. I certainly don't think mine is the one and only true fan way!
