...it wasn't until we went to the funeral that I remembered that my grandmother's surname wasn't Fuji. She was Otousan's mother, but he married into the Fuji family rather than Kaasan marrying into his. For many years his name was Shimizu, then he married and became Fuji. One of us.
清水 left behind to become 不二. It's sort of strange that only now am I thinking about something such as, did she resent that he left her name behind and took Kaasan's? Did he stop being Shimizu just because he dressed in Fuji?
If Obaasan resented it, she never showed it to us. Over the years, she probably bought enough ice cream to feed a small country, because Yuuta loves ice cream. She gave me my first cactus and put wasabi in everything for me, even my ice cream.
