Utah House Bill 363 - Guaranteeing Danger For Kids

Mar 07, 2012 07:56

Do you know anyone in Utah? Because they need to make a phonecall today!

On Tuesday afternoon (March 6th) the Utah Senate passed Bill 363 which prohibits schools from teaching sex education beyond abstinence and marital fidelity. The bill also prohibits teachers from mentioning homosexuality, even if a student asks them about it.
(Full text of the bill with amendments here!)

"After the new bill goes into effect, the teaching of sex education in Utah classrooms has to be about not having sex before marriage and fidelity within marriage. Teachers cannot advocate the use of contraceptives anymore and they cannot talk about homosexuality, even if asked by a student." - From this article about the bill.

It’s so dangerous that this bill has passed! States that don’t teach sex ed have a much higher rate of teen pregnancies, abortions, stds, etc. Schools where kids aren’t able to talk about homosexuality end up with teen suicides. This is basically the government ensuring that their children will have a higher mortality rate!

The only way to stop this bill being signed into law is to contact Governor Gary Herbert and tell him not to sign the bill!
Here is how to do that:
1. Call his office at 801-538-1000 or 800-705-2464.
2. Email his office here: http://governor.utah.gov/goca/form_comm ent.html
3. Facebook him here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Gary-R-Herbert/211722425515547
4. Tweet him @governorherbert
5. Go visit his office and ask to speak with him in person at this address: 350 North State Street, Suite 200, Salt Lake City.

If you know ANYONE in Utah (friends or otherwise) please get them to contact Governor Herbert and tell him he MUST NOT SIGN THIS BILL! It only takes a few minutes to make this kind of phonecall or email. It may be too late to stop this bill from being signed into law, but given that children’s lives are essentially at stake it is worth it to get yourself heard!
