There may be hope for my 15 year old daughter, Melissa.
She has taken the lead in organizing a class project that involves purchasing Christmas gifts for less fortunate children. Tonight she had me take her to ToysRus so she could spend their class money on two more gifts - one for a girl and one for a boy. We started with the girl's gift . As we went by the Barbie section, Melissa noticed that one of the Barbies was wearing a skimpy shirt that showed off most of her stomach. "What kind of message does that send to a young girl?" she commented. "Not an appropriate one" I responded and we opted for a Polly Pocket set.
Then it was time for the boy's gift. Remembering my youth, I picked up the latest GI Joe (Sigma 6) complete with some kind of mega weapon. "Perhaps something less violent would be more appropriate" she suggested. "Good point" I responded and we opted for a Spiderman that ejects from a car.
After checking out she thanked me again for helping her. It was obvious she felt good about doing something to make someone else's Christmas a little brighter.
On the drive back to her place she sang along to the Christmas tape playing in my car. The song was "Take a walk through Bethlehem" by Trisha Yearwood.
It has to be one of the finest Christmas songs ever written. And it never sounded better than tonight.
