I wrote this over a year ago, in my creative writing class. I mostly did the assignments at the last minute, and as such, they never really were that great. Added on to the fact that I dont have the literary touch, I never wrote anything good. Once in a while I thought I had a good idea, and this was probably my favorite story I wrote for that class. All that was specified was that we were to write about a girl in a raincoat.
Stepping outside, the two realized the perfect day they had been expecting was soon transforming itself into a rainy one. There was barely any evidence for the change of weather, other than the fact that a few large rain drops fell randomly on the sidewalk around them. She looked up at him, her gleeful face changing to one of apprehension. He did not frown back at her, instead just turning and opening the door.
"It's such a beautiful morning, and you're just going to go back inside, because of a few rain droplets?"
He hesitated.
"No. I just thought we could try out those raincoats we bought recently. Why waste the first day of fall inside?"
Instantly her gloomy expression was replaced by a smile, and she rushed in after him. She ran with such enthusiasm that she overtook him and ran to the door, swinging it open and retrieving the raincoats, still packed away in boxes in the closet. She already had hers on when he finally showed up.
"You look gorgeous in that coat. I hope you like it."
The words had an intoxicating effect on the woman, whose cheeks became flushed. She took him by the hand and dragged him out of the room. He did not show the same enthusiasm she did, but the woman seemed not to pick up on this.
"You go on ahead, I'll just lock up."
They stood there for a second, staring at each other. She had not yet lost the smile that had materialized at the mentioning of the raincoats. She turned around and scampered down the stairs.
Stepping outside, she was greeted by a few large water droplets. It had not begun to rain steadily, and so she was able to look up at the sky, still clear of dark clouds. The light refracted through the bead-like water droplets that fell, creating a majestic radiance and a myriad of colors. She flinched as a drop hit her in the eye, forcing her to turn her head away for a second. It was merely a momentary setback. She went back to reflecting at the luminosity that rained from the still taintless sky.
What next caught her eye was her other source of beauty, and she soon forgot the splendor that she had just witnessed. She ran over to the man, who seemed to wander past her, almost as if he had missed her completely.
"Hey silly, where are you going? Don't leave me behind, I'd much rather enjoy the day with you than by myself."
In her eyes there was nothing dark around her. She was surrounded by pure light. It came pouring through the atmosphere, reflecting off of both of their glossy yellow raincoats; it was bent through the water droplets in the sky and those in the grass; it even seemed to beam off of the couple. She sprang up to give him hug. She was not greeted with the same tenderness she showed towards him; instead, he seemed drained of emotion, and she withdrew.
"What's wrong? Why, why aren't you... What's wrong?"
He turned his back to her, walking a couple steps away. Only now she noticed his head hanging lower than she had ever seen it. She also noticed the faded color of his raincoat. The words barely escaped his mouth.
"I, I don't think this is going to work anymore."
She stood there, appalled. She had difficulty speaking.
"How, what do you mean you don't think this is gonna work? How can you say something like that?" She could get out no more.
Neither could he. He walked away, leaving her standing in the rain, now pelting her with a swarm of stinging droplets of rain. Looking down, she saw that all of the color in her raincoat was gone; she was left standing in her black raincoat.
