hey everyone! its been a long time since ive posted anything genuinely interesting on this blog, so here ya go. this, my friends, is
when i was about 10 years old i bough this awesome Sierra adventure games pack. there were 5 games, but the only game that i can really remember was a robin hood rpg. but anyway, this screensaver came with the pack as well, and throughout my life i have always remembered this charming program, which turned out to be a lot more memorable than any of the games. lo and behold, the other day i found an updated version of it that can run on modern computers, and im happy to say that its just as charming as i remembered it.
this screensaver stars our man johnny castaway, as he lives his life on a tiny island. you see johnny doing all the stuff we would do to stop from going insane if we were stuck on an island. he eats, sleeps, works on a raft, sends out SOS messages in bottles and so forth. occasionallytho , really crazy shit will happen to him. like he'll get attacked by miniature pirates in a miniature pirate ship, or fall in love with a mermaid! tons of incredibly random shit always happens if u watch long enough, ive been running johnny on my comp for the last 3 weeks now and i barely scratched the surface of everything that johnny gets into.... and apparently if u watch long enough, johnny even escapes off the island! there is so much shit in this little program that people have reportedly run johnny for years on their office computers and not seen everything that happens to poor old johnny.
johnny is actually one of the first instances of human intelligence modeled into a computer program. its pretty normal in modern games nowadays, ala the sims, but back when i was 10 this shit was absolutely mindblowing. i remember how after we got it installed, me and my dad were completely enthralled with what was going on on the screen, we must have watched johnny for hours. and im happy to say that that same amazement still hasnt left, some 15 years later! that is truly the sign of good entertainment!
i did some research on the company that made johnny, apparently it was the brainchild of four or five people, who after making johnny, all went their seperate ways and are now the heads of their own gaming companies. so enjoy johnny to the fullest, he is definitely one of the most pleasant anomalies the gaming industry has ever produced, and theres never going to be any sort of program as unique ever again.
