Are these people sure they didn't actually accidentally have an over-brewed green with too many leaves in it?
I don't recognise that description at ALL. O.o Although, my mother does think the leaves are smelly and that the first time she had it it didn't taste like anything, but as it evolved it became quite nice. (Admittedly the first cup she had could have steeped a bit longer)
I think I have a tendency to make it pretty weak. I always have to remind myself that I can't dose it the same way as blacks.
I actually quite love Lapsang Souchong. It's been ages since I've had any, though, but it's the one I keep telling myself I want to buy more of and then I never remember it when actually ordering. I've got the same problem with Russian Caravan. I find Golden Yunnan to be very smokey too, more so than Lapsang Souchong, but I once ended up in quite a discussion with someone who totally couldn't recognise that description of it. A lot of people who don't like greens have described it as tasting like mulch. There's another description I can't recognise, but I can somewhat understand it.
When I was younger, I remember trying a Russian Earl Grey tea with lavender in it. I mistakenly ordered a bunch of Russian Caravan, thinking it was all the same, and wow, was I in for a surprise! I like Golden Yunnan, but I have to be in the right kind of mood for Lapsang Souchong. Tasting like mulch? I guess I see where they're coming from... but... that doesn't sound appetizing at all!!
I adore the lavender flavouring! I confess that I am currently addicted to those London Fog with vanilla drinks, the Earl Grey and steamed milk concoction - I'm not normally a dairy fan, but this is one sure way to get my daily intake of calcium!
If I'm craving dessert, sweetened tea is a nice treat - I was just thinking that lately I'm a huge fan of London Fog (that steamed milk/Earl Grey concoction) with some vanilla added, so obviously, I do drink it sweet on special occasions (that don't involve my being ill, even!)...

(Of course, Lapsong Souchong is the one I think is an acquired taste - that smokiness is not something I'm always in the mood to try.)

I can never use sugar in my tea, unless I have a sore throat (and then I prefer honey). All your tea? Even herbals?
