So, as an employee of the Japanese government (foreign or no), all civil servants must take a yearly health check. Prior to the check, we must all fill in a health questionnaire form. I did it last year, and had a great time laughing over some of the questions that are just so Japanese-specific, it was hilarious. I'm filling it again this year, and here are some of my favourite questions:
How many cigarettes do you smoke a day:
1. Less than 5 a day
2. 6-10 a day
3. 11-15 a day
(it goes on until more than 41 a day)
Note that 'zero' is not an option, because it seems that, and I do get that impression, all Japanese people smoke.
How much alcohol do you drink a day?
1. Under 1 gou (unit)
2. Under 1-2 gou
3. Under 2-3 gou
(list goes on, again no 'zero' option)
Have you ever been told 'Disorder' after taking a chest X-ray exam?
(I just like the way this question was phrased/translated. I have an image of a doctor shouting 'DISORDER!' to the patient after the X-ray is done)
How big is your rice bowl?
1. Big size
2. Middle size
3. Small size
How many times do you eat Miso-soup in a day?
1. Rarely
2. 1-2 times a day
3. Every times
Do you often eat Japanese pickles?
1. Rarely
2. Usual amount
3. Sometimes
4. Often
Do you pour soy-source into almost all foods?
1. Rarely
2. A little
3. Liberally
The health check itself is pretty intense, a whole morning of tests on a rotating schedule, at the local community centre. I guess it does get me out of work for a whole day but I just can't stand the breathing test and having my blood taken.
