I just finished reading Lonesome Dove, and this was a lovely story to read afterward. There were so many perfect details- the snow, the cold, the way Newt (grown-up, competent, wonderful Newt! (also, calling him Call was maybe the most perfect choice you could have made)) always seemed to be looking in windows, the way the dead sort of faded in slowly until there was a bar full of them, the phrase "drinking with dead men." This was eeire and haunting in the best possible way. I absolutely adored it.
*Grins* Actually, I can’t take credit for the set up/background information. The fanfic’s based on a Canadian tv series called “Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years” that I used to watch in high school. The series followed Newt Dobbs/Call’s adventures post-novel (ignoring McMurtry’s sequel Streets of Laredo, where he’s killed off). It was most notable for featuring Eric McCormack of Will & Grace as a smarmy saloon owner with a tragic past. Like Al Swearingen, but much, much prettier.

Oh, Canada.
Seriously, it is awesome to know that there is an entire TV series devoted to rectifying the injustice that is Streets of Laredo (which I may or may not have hurled across the room). And that Newt was adorable in it. And that he rode the Hell Bitch!
Also, I still adore the story, regardless of its canon.
*grins* I may or may not have throw a kicking, screaming temper tantrum over Order of the Phoenix, so I think we're even there.
Newt is indeed adorable in the series. I used to watch it as a fourteen-year-old and absolutely lust after him and the Eric McCormack character (who had a Southern accent and occasionally wore cravats, and was therefore possessed of instant hotness).
Glad you enjoyed the story, despite not having seen the show. I mainly posted it up for the benefit of my one fellow Lonesome Dove tv series fan (whom I dragooned into watching it with me in college), so I'm thrilled that other people are reading it.
And I get to pimp my-favourite-tv-show-from-when-I-was-fourteen some more!
Very nice and atmospheric. This was actually a good Day of the Dead story, since it was more creepy and sad than scary- which actually works better, since Call doesn't scare easily.
Oh, goodness! I just loved this so much. Makes me want to get out my DVDs and rewatch them all. I loved all the "ghosts" that were present in the story - little bits and pieces from throughout the series. And Mary, too. LOVE that Call thought she was Hannah for a moment, but there were just a few things that were not quite the same.
“Ghosts?” Mosby raised his eyebrows, stroked his beard. “I believe people can be haunted by their past, certainly, but actual ghosts?” He shook his head. “Probably not. Why? Thinking of conducting a séance?” And I loved this little bit. It's very much in character for Mosby - haunted by his past. And him asking Call if he's thinking of conducting a seance is perfectly written in Mosby's devilish way
