Only 11 days late! I thought briefly about backdating this to January first so the posts would all line up nice and need, but then decided to just go ahead and do the daily challenges out of order as I complete them.
Day 01:
In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges? I haven't posted to LJ/DW in literal years, and barely participate here anymore outside of the ff_a meme, so I'm hoping to get myself back into the posting habit. Tumblr sucks for fannish discussion and interaction, and I haven't really participated in namespace fandom in a significant way since the death of metafandom/since 616 Steve/Tony fandom got swallowed whole by MCU fandom.
I used to regularly participate in fannish discussions and to post meta on a regular basis, and I'm not sure when I went from "my thinky thoughts - let me share them with you!" to "who cares about my unsolicited uninformed opinion that I'm not really qualified to give and that will probably just get called out for being problematic anyway" - probably a gradual build of a combination of SJ call-out culture, the death of metafandom, the fact that metanews (metafandom's sort-of-replacement) mixes fandom blog posts with posts from the Professional SF blogosphere in such a way that I don't feel like it's "my" discussion space the way metafandom's all-LJ/DW-slash-fandom selections were, the general relocation of fandom's center of gravity to tumblr, and the fact that "trying not to start wank by posting negative opinions about comics" gradually led via Marvel's editorial choices/continued employment of certain writers to "just plain old never posting about comics at all."
I miss participating in fandom. I especially miss it now that seanchai and I have spent most of the past year working on a slow-going original fic project rather than writing/posting fic. So this seemed like as good a way as any to try and engage again, even if I did forget about the Snowflake challenge until yesterday and have to join in 11 days late when it's almost over.
