Murder Ballads: an Olivier de la Ferre/Anne de Breuil | Athos/Milady de Winter fanmix (link goes to 8tracks)

Queen of Hearts - Joan Baez

(Nobody is going to come between Anne and her new husband, no matter who she has to kill tokeep it that way)

To the queen of hearts is the ace of sorrow
He's here today, he's gone tomorrow
Young men are plenty but sweethearts few
If my love leaves me what shall I do?

Had I the store in yonder mountain
Where gold and silver is there for counting
I could not count for thought of thee
My eyes so full I could not see

I love my father, I love my mother
I love my sister, I love my brother
I love my friends and relatives too
I'll forsake them all and go with you

To the queen of hearts is the ace of sorrow
He's here today, he's gone tomorrow
Young men are plenty but sweethearts few
If my love leaves me what shall I do?

If Ever I Return Pretty Peggy-O - Jack Hinshelwood

(The Comte de la Ferre learns that "Anne de Breuil" is a lying liar who lies. And also that she murdered his brother. Oops?)

As we marched down to Fenario
As we marched down to Fenario
Our captain feel in love with a lady like a dove
And the name she was called was pretty Peggy-o

What will your mother think, Pretty Peggy-o
What will your mother think, Pretty Peggy-o
What will your mother think when she hears the guineas clink
And the soldiers all a marching before ye-o

Come a tripping down the stairs, Pretty Peggy-o
Come a tripping down the stairs, Pretty Peggy-o
Come a tripping down the stair, combing back your yellow hair
Bid a last farewell to handsome Willy-o

Sweet William is dead, Pretty Peggy-o
Sweet William is dead, Pretty Peggy-o
Sweet William is dead, and he died for a maid
The fairest maiden in the are-o

If ever I return, Pretty Peggy-o
If ever I return, Pretty Peggy-o
If ever I return, all your cities I will burn
And destroy all the ladies in the are-o

Knoxville Girl - Lixian Hantover

("Alas and woe is me, for I killed the woman I love" - out of the innumerable songs dedicated to this theme, 'Knoxville Girl' is probably the most brutal. It's based on earlier English and Irish ballads called, respectively, 'Oxford Girl' and 'Wexford Girl,' which are in turn both based on an even earlier broadside ballad about a 'Cruel Miller' who seduces and murders a young girl. You can see this song either as a nod to book!canon, or as Milady's "I'm the victim here" version of events.)

I met a little girl in Knoxville
A town we all know well
And every Sunday evening
Out in her home I'd dwell
We went to take an evening walk
About a mile from town
I picked a stick up off the ground
And knocked that fair girl down;

She fell down on her bended knees
For mercy she did cry
Oh, Billy dear, don't kill me here
I'm unprepared to die
She never spoke another word
I only beat her more
Until the ground around me
With her blood did pour.

I took her by her golden curls
I drug her 'round and 'round
I threw her into the river
That flows through Knoxville town
Go down, go down, you Knoxville girl
Go down, go down, go down.
Go down, go down, you Knoxville girl
Go down, go down, go down.

I started back to Knoxville
Got there about midnight
My mother she was worried
And woke up in a fright
Saying, "Son, dear son, what have you done
To bloody your clothes so?"
I told my anxious mother
I was bleeding at my nose.

I called for me a candle
To light myself to bed
I called for me a handkerchief
To bind my aching head
Rolled and tumbled the whole night through
As troubles was for me
Like flames of hell around my bed
And in my eyes could see.

They carried me down to Knoxville
And put me in a cell
My friends all tried to get me out
But none could go my bail
I'm here to waste my life away
Down in this dirty old jail
Because I murdered that Knoxville girl
The girl I loved so well.

Prickle Holly Bush - the Watersons

(Both this song and the next are variants of Child Ballad #95, about a maid sentenced to be hung from the gallows, which exists in easily half a dozen forms. In the most hard-core, the lover also states that he's come to see her hang, and she presumably dies. Sadly, almost everyone who's ever recorded it changes the hanging victim's gender to male, but it's supposed to be about a woman.)

“Oh, slack your horse,” he cried,
“Come slack it for a while,
For I think I see my father
Coming over yonder style.”

“Did you bring gold?
Did you bring silver to set me free?
For to keep my body from the cold gaol wall
And me neck from the high gallows tree.”

“I've no gold,
I've no silver to set you free,
But I have come for to see you hang,
Oh, hang upon the high gallows tree.”

Oh, the prickle-holly bush, it pricks, it pricks,
Oh, it pricks my heart full sore
And if ever I get out of the prickle-holly bush
I'll never get in there any more.

[Repeat for the singer’s mother and sister; then the singer’s sweetheart, who responds:]

“I've brought gold,
I've brought silver to set you free,
For I've not come for to see you hang,
Oh, hang upon the high gallows tree.”

Oh, the prickle-holly bush, it pricks, it pricks,
Oh, it pricks my heart full sore
And now that I'm out of the prickle-holly bush
I'll never get in there any more.

Gallows Pole - Great Big Sea

Hangman, hangman!
Hold a little while,
I think I see my brother coming,
Riding many a mile.

Brother, did you bring me some silver,
Did ya bring a little gold?
What did you bring me, my brother,
To save me from the gallows pole?
Save me from the gallows pole?

I brought a little silver,
I brought a little gold!
Do you know what?
We're too damn poor,
To keep you from the gallows pole!
To keep you from the gallows pole!

Hangman, hangman!
Turn your head a while,
I think I see my sister coming,
Riding many a mile.

Sister, I implore you!
Take him by the hand,
Take him to some shady place.
Save me from the wrath of this man.
Save me from the wrath of this man!

Hangman, hangman!
Upon your faceless smile.
Pre tell me I'm free to ride,
Ride for many a mile!

Yes, you got a fine sister.
She warmed my blood from cold!
Brought my blood to the boiling point,
To keep you from the gallows pole!
To keep you from the gallows pole!

Your brother brought me some silver,
Your sister warmed my soul;
But now I laugh and I pull so hard,
See you swinging on the gallows pole!
Swinging on the gallows pole!
Swinging on the gallows pole!
Swinging on the gallows pole!

Where the Wild Roses Grow - Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue

(And now for a twist on the "Alas and woe is me, for I killed the woman I love" genre - "I killed my love and I'm not even sorry!" Just keep telling yourself that, Athos. Maybe one day you'll believe it.)

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one
She stared in my eyes and smiled
For her lips were the colour of the roses
That grew down the river, all bloody and wild

When he knocked on my door and entered the room
My trembling subsided in his sure embrace
He would be my first man, and with a careful hand
He wiped at the tears that ran down my face

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

On the second day I brought her a flower
She was more beautiful than any woman I'd seen
I said, "Do you know where the wild roses grow
So sweet and scarlet and free?"

On the second day he came with a single red rose
Said: "Will you give me your loss and your sorrow"
I nodded my head, as I lay on the bed
He said, "If I show you the roses, will you follow?"

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

On the third day he took me to the river
He showed me the roses and we kissed
And the last thing I heard was a muttered word
As he knelt above me with a rock in his fist

On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow
And she lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief
And I kissed her goodbye, said, "All beauty must die"
And lent down and planted a rose between her teeth

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

Omie Homage - Eileen

(A re-working of a traditional Appalachian murder ballad, 'Little Omie.' In the original, the eponymous heroine is murdered. In this version, she turns the tables on her killer and escapes to ride away triumphant.

No lyrics for this one, since the album's lack of liner notes meant I'd have had to transcribe it.)

Devil's Spoke - Laura Marling

(Anne de Breuil is dead. Milady de Winter is a survivor, and she has not forgotten Athos.)

That I might be a part of this,
Ripple on water from a lonesome drip,
A fallen tree that witnessed me,
Him alone, him and me.

And that life itself could not aspire,
To have someone be so admired,
I threw creation to my kin,
With a silence broken by a whispered wind.

All of this can be broken,
All of this can be broken,
Hold your devil by his spoke and spin him to the ground.

Root to root and tip to tip,
I look at him my country drip,
Leathered up by all his fears,
But someone brought you close to tears.

Many trains and many miles,
Brought you to me on this sunny isle
And what of which you wish to speak,
Have you come here to rescue me?

All of this can be broken,
All of this can be broken,
Hold your devil by his spoke and spin him to the ground.

But the love of your life lives, but lies no more
Than where she lay your f lowers grows,
The arms that fed and the babes that wed,
The backs that bled keeping her in tow,

But I am your keeper,
And I hold your face away from light,
I am yours 'till they come,
I am yours 'till they come.

Eye to eye, nose to nose,
Ripping off each others clothes in a most peculiar way.
Eye to eye, nose to nose,
Ripping off each others' clothes in a most peculiar way.

The Darkness - Leonard Cohen

(Okay, just pretend the line about not drinking isn't there, since pretty much nobody in the history of ever drinks more than Athos. Otherwise, it's an extremely fitting song about being depressed, brooding, and dead inside over a woman.)

I caught the darkness
Drinking from your cup
I caught the darkness
Drinking from your cup
I said: Is this contagious?
You said: Just drink it up

I got no future
I know my days are few
The present’s not that pleasant
Just a lot of things to do
I thought the past would last me
But the darkness got that too

I should have seen it coming
It was right behind your eyes
You were young and it was summer
I just had to take a dive
Winning you was easy
But darkness was the prize

I don’t smoke no cigarette
I don’t drink no alcohol
I ain’t had much loving yet
But that’s always been your call
Hey I don’t miss it baby
I got no taste for anything at all

I used to love the rainbow
I used to love the view
I loved the early morning
I’d pretend that it was new
But I caught the darkness baby
And I got it worse than you
I caught the darkness

Henry Lee - Nick Cave & PJ Harvey

(Returning to our main theme of murder ballads, for a rare example of one where the man is the victim and the woman the killer. The opening lines coincidentally serve as a nice echo of the "go down, go down" refrain from 'Knoxville Girl.')

Get down, get down, little Henry Lee
And stay all night with me
You won't find a girl in this damn world
That will compare with me

And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

I can't get down and I won't get down
And stay all night with thee
For the girl I have in that merry green land
I love far better than thee

And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

She leaned herself against a fence
Just for a kiss or two
And with a little pen-knife held in her hand
She plugged him through and through

And the wind did roar and the wind did moan
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

Come take him by his lily-white hands
Come take him by his feet
And throw him in this deep deep well
Which is more than one hundred feet

And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

Lie there, lie there, little Henry Lee
Till the flesh drops from your bones
For the girl you have in that merry green land
Can wait forever for you to come home

And the wind did howl and the wind did moan
La la la la la
La la la la lee
A little bird lit down on Henry Lee

Seven Devils - Florence and the Machine

(Milady is going to have her revenge, even if she has to die to achieve it. A little book canon mixed in with show canon here, since book!Milady manages to win against Athos and d'Artagnan despite dying, and continues to haunt Athos afterwards)

Holy water
Cannot help you now
A thousand armies
Couldn't keep me out
I don't want your money
I don't want your crown
See I've come to burn
Your kingdom down

Holy water
Cannot help you now
See I've come to burn
Your kingdom down
And no rivers and no lakes
Can put the fire out
I'm gonna raise the stakes,
I'm gonna smoke you out

Seven devils all around me!
Seven devils in my house!
See they were there when I woke up this morning
And I'll be dead before the day is done

Seven devils all around you
Seven devils in your house
See I was dead when I woke up this morning
And I'll be dead before the day is done
Before the day is done

And now all your love
Will be exorcised
And we will find you saints
o be canonized
And it's an evensong
It's a melody
It's a battle cry
It's a symphony

Seven devils all around me
Seven devils in my house
See they were there when I woke up this morning
And I'll be dead before the day is done

Seven devils all around you
Seven devils in your house
See I was dead when I woke up this morning
And I'll be dead before the day is done
Before the day is done
Before the day is done
Before the day is done

They can keep me out
'Til I tear the walls
'Til I save your heart
And to take your soul
For what has been done
Cannot be undone
In the evil's heart
In the evil's soul

Seven devils all around you
Seven devils in your house
See I was dead when I woke up this morning
I'll be dead before the day is done
Before the day is done
