NEW YORK DEDICATES CBGB’s STREET CORNER TO RAMONE
As CBGB continues to inarguably stand as the landmark of American punk rock, the Ramones are the band responsible for watering the seeds of its legendary reputation. At 1pm on Nov. 30, the corner of East Second Street and Bowery will become “Joey Ramone Place,” in honor of the punk icon’s passing in April 2001 from cancer. CB’s will also be turning 30 years old in December, and the venue’s owner, Hilly Kristal, commented on the importance of Joey and the Ramones’ influence on New York City and punk rock history. After their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the death of Dee Dee Ramone in 2002, renaming the street corner is a proper homage to the roots of punk in New York and America.
ELLIOTT SMITH TRIBUTE CONCERT HELD IN LOS ANGELES
Musicians united to pay their respects to singer/songwriter Elliott Smith by taking part in a tribute concert held on Nov. 3 in Los Angeles. The lineup included friends and admirers playing short sets of Smith’s music. Beth Orton, Beck, Rilo Kiley and Bright Eyes, were among the main performers. Held at the Henry Fonda Theater, all of the proceeds will be donated to the Elliott Smith Foundation for Abused Children, which Smith had launched earlier this year. Lou Barlow will take Smith’s place at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival on Nov. 9, fronting a tribute band for his departed friend.
(i told you i've gone psycho. i might not ever come out of this musical swamp.)
