Yesterday I sat and worked on the column I write every week, and as I have been rather p**ed off by the lyrics "Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me" and a band called Pussycat Dolls lately - I knew it was time to kill some cats. (I mean, sorry - haven't women on this planet got enough probs if we're not also going to listen to glorified shit about girls stealing each others boyfriends???)
Yeah yeah I know they're a former burlesque-troupe and all, but these Pussycrap Dolls are SO on my shit list for August. I have heard young girls say they feel physically bad just watching the them perform on MTV, my husbands daughter who's 17 just snarled and gagged when I asked her opinion.
Ok, this auntie Elsie is luckier. She belongs to a generation of women who was blessed with some major hot ladies for rolemodels. All I can say girls is look about 10 - 20 years back in time for female rock'n'rollers and throw all this fabricated stupid cattyness made to make you feel inferior in the trash, right where it belongs.
Coz girlies, music can actually - surprise - be good for your egos! Like, if I feel a bit down i have my fave recreational drug placed right up there in my cd-rack. No, it's not a small pill box of nembutals hidden behing my Chris Isaak-cd's. It's a stack of cd's by a very select group of female musicians who never fail to boost my soul:
Janis Joplin, Pat Benatar, Sheryl Crow, Patti Smith, Heart, Cindy Lauper, Melissa Etheridge and Pink - ladies who's never been afraid to belt out a song with the best of them.
No, you heard me right, Madonna is not in this stack of mine. Not because I dont like her, I adore Madonna but musically she's never had quite the same effect on me as Janis, Melissa or Pink, who can pick me up, shake my adrenaline coctail and throw me around a bit when I need it.
The funny thing is - most of my male firends have at one time or another slagged my girls off for some reason, called them whiney, man-hating lesbo, crap, pathetic, angry, ugly and god knows what.. At first I didn't understand, but I realise they make some men feel threatened. But to me, Janis, Melissa, Patti, Alanis, Sheryl and last but not least the lovely lovely Pink - are raunchy, flirty, sexy, nasty, hot, hot, hot - in other words: true goddesses. They are like a good snort - and hey - no side effects, except for a few blows to certain inflated egos! For any woman who have ever been used, dissed or walked all over, that certainly is a risk worth taking lol.
So, young girls, please remember this: For those who feel threatened by strong women certain stereotypes are best left safely cemented, so that we, wives/girlfriends/sisters - remain passive and inferior and "in our place". Bands like Pusscycrap Dolls serves this purpose perfectly . Hearing them "sing" makes me feel like going down the local boozer, down a couple of beers and hit something. Instead I indulge in a dose of Pink's "Trouble":
"You think you were right, but you were wrong - you tried to take me - but I knew all along. You can't take me for a ride - I'm not a fool now, so you better run and hide...I'm trouble, yea trouble now, I'm trouble y'all, trouble in my town"...
Ahhh, that made me feel better.
Happy weekend all!
