They usually fail because the rubber boot about them breaks, which lets the road dirt in and the greese leak out... Re-lubing might fix the problem and that only cost about $40.00! Go to a service station to have it done, not a dealer. If it starts making a grinding sound when you turn a corner, and you start to feel a vibration in the steering wheel, then it's time to replace em, and note, you do BOTH sides at the same time.

I know all this. Actually, the boot was very torn and we replaced it to at least keep the joint from getting worse. We should've just changed the joint at that time b/c I was holding it in my hand and would have been just as easy to put in a new one. Although most of the time you do change both joints, there's nothing wrong with the left joint. Well, there's nothing that seems wrong with it. But it's been a lot of miles and CV joints usually go out after about forty to fifty thousand miles. We'll see. If I had the time or the means, I'd change the CV joint myself. Hey, if I can change a boot with some assistance then I can change the joint mostly on my own. Geeze. That was one of the messiest jobs...
