Confused and Confounded

Am I the only one who sees a crazy level of hypocrisy when a vegan smokes?

Well, some of them actually do it for animals' rights, in which case it's not hypocrisy. But if it's for health purposes? Oy.

No, it's still hypocritical.

"I shall protect all the poor little animals, but I have no problem smoking nasty illness-inducing cancer sticks and then blowing the smoke all over Bethy and getting her sick."

See? Still hypocritical. Why protect the animals but not the Bethys? I'm worth more than a cow!

Maybe they disagree. Maybe the vegan smokers are just animal lovers and people haters. You should ask the next one you see. Solve this mystery for all of us. -Danielle

But aren't those the people who say that people are really nothing more than animals? So by that logic, they should care about *all* animals, not just the commonly eaten ones. O:-)

*snickers and heartily agrees* That is the problem I've found with a lot of animal rights and other environmentalist people--they go to the extreme of promoting the welfare of everything else, but forget that humans are worth far more than animals . . .

Well I'm 100% against smoking and I completely agree that you should say something to her. You have a right to ask her to not smoke around you (in public- I guess it's different if you were in her own house).

But I'd leave out the vegan thing (unless she obnoxiously brings it up all the time and tries to force it on other people). People are vegan for a lot of different reasons- some think its wrong to hurt animals that can't stand up for themselves while some just think it's gross and some do it for the health reasons (which are questionable- animal protein is a very good source of many minerals our bodies need). If she is a vegan because she believes that animals can't stand up for themselves and are being treated cruelly at egg factories, beef ranches, etc., then I would say its not necessarily hypocritical because you, unlike the animal, can stand up for yourself and remove yourself from the harmful effects of the smoke.
But whether it's hypocritical or not, it's rude, and you shouldn't put up with it, IMO.
