“Colonel Mustard in the library with the candlestick, repeat, Colonel Mustard in-
Arthur lifted his walkie talking under the moonlit sky, hissing into it, “Got you the first time Merlin. Now if Professor Plum comes, you better let me know.”
“Got you. Over and out Arthur.”
“What is he doing?” Gwen asked with a frown to her thirteen year old brow. Arthur grabbed hold of her hand and pulled her with him to the window. “It’s our code for if there’s any interference. That was the janitor, on the other side of the campus, good for us.” They started to climb in, Gwen being boosted by Arthur as a new voice came from the walkie talkie.
“Professor Plum is in the kitchen…I repeat Professor Plum has entered the kitchen with the rope. AAAAAHHHH! Dead-
“Give me that Gwaine. Arthur, don’t listen to him. Gwaine!”
Arthur started to yell through the walkie talkie, until Gwen grasped his shoulder. “Someone will hear, Arthur.” He nodded, speaking softly, but with insult. “Merlin, you idiot, all I asked you to do was keep watch on the front gate. And you can’t even do that?”
“Gwaine took the walkie talkie from me!”
“Well get it back from him!”
Meanwhile, through the walkie talkie, in a perfect Southern accent…
“Who done it? Well…it was Miss Scarlet with the revolver in the conservatory…
Oh no-Merlin…ah…you’re no fun!”
“Got it back Arthur!”
“Good. Now keep it.”
“Will do. Clotpole. That’s for calling for me an idiot.”
Arthur rolled his eyes and once again helped Gwen through the window. He’d deal with Merlin and his really odd name-calling later. After Gwen, he climbed through the window too. They both carefully stayed away from the floor which was where the alarm would set off and they’d be toast for entering the school after hours. Huddled on the short counter with Gwen, holding her close which she wasn’t objecting to, {after all, they kissed for the first time at Cendred’s ‘in the closet’ party}, he changed the channel and spoke to a new person.
“Lance?”
“Miss White just vacated the billiard room with the lead pipe.”
“Great.” Arthur grasped onto Gwen’s waist, whispering. “We can step down. Lance and Leon took care of the alarm.”
They searched the Earth Science classroom, going from one place to another. “Hold on a minute.” Arthur remembered suddenly. “I think Percy knows where it is.” He got on his walkie talkie again, talking to Percival who was the guard of the operation. “Hey Perc, where did you say we’d probably find it?”
“In the study. Three drawers down.”
“Got it.”
Gwen rounded the room, finding the teacher’s huge filing cabinet. She opened it at three drawers down. “Why all the code again?”
Arthur shrugged. “Outside it’s important.”
“But inside?” She asked with a skeptical look.
He shrugged once more. “It’s fun.”
Gwen had to agree with a smile as she held it in her hand. “Got it.”
“Okay, let’s get out of here before the alarm sets back in.”
They carefully made their way to the window, and were climbing out when Merlin warned, Gwaine echoing for effect after him. “Uh, Professor Plum is nearing the lounge. I repeat….Percy, just in case, you ready?”
“Yeah…”
“Arthur?”
“Come on Gwen!”
They locked hands with each other and started running for the front.
“Where is he now Merlin?” Arthur asked as they were about fifteen feet from the gate.
“Entering the dining room, carrying the wrench.”
“Wrench? Gwen asked, as they sprinted the last feet.
“Super flashlight that the school guard carries.” Arthur told her as they made their way out just in time.

Hours later, in Arthur’s parents house, they all gathered around his attic floor.
Gwaine asked, while chomping down on too many Oreos,
“Why you said we had to get this again?”
“Well Mrs. Annis always keeps anything she confiscates from us for the whole year.”
“It’s that important?” Merlin asked with wonder. Arthur gave him a sobering look that even Gwen wondered about as he removed it from the cloth.
All of them gaped.
“It’s glowing!”
Then they looked to Merlin too who was chanting some weird words.
“What?” Arthur asked.
Merlin shook his head oddly as Gwen moved in closer to Arthur and he wrapped his arm around her.
They just all had the eeriest feeling that the rest of seventh grade wasn’t going to be that normal.
As Merlin now started to say in perfect English straight to Arthur,
“Take me up and…
“Oh wow!” Gwaine yelled through his Oreo lined lips. “I think Professor Plum used the wrench this time in the kitchen!”
They all rolled their eyes, but it was clear now.
The adventure was only beginning, and it went way beyond a board game of who-done-it.
