You've conveyed Merlin's loneliness perfectly here. How no matter that people reach out to him, he cannot properly reciprocate because he's left out an important part of himself, his personal identity. It feels like he's keeping a secret so huge that it consumes all of him.
And yet there is hope. The Old religion is past its prime. Magic has to be brought back, I think, but in a different way. A new way. A new way where magic and non-magic folk can co-exist peacefully without fear. And that's what Merlin is hoping for and to build that with Arthur.
. “I tell lies all the time now. I say I go to places I don’t go to. I say I don’t know people that I do. I say that I don’t have magic when I do. I say that magic cannot be in Camelot, when it is. When I use it all the time. So you see Mother, I’m always lying.” ( ... )

I love Merlin and Gwen's friendship and I'm holding onto the hope that we get more of them. That was one of my absolute favorite scenes to write for this fic. It just flowed so naturally when I was starting this. So I'm very happy you enjoyed it.
Yes, you said it perfectly. Merlin has not given everyone, partly because he can't, his whole identity really. He keeps himself from sharing that for what are arguably strong reasons. So its weight is so big and you could feel that in the episode that inspired this.
Oh, yeah, I would love that. To have the new kind of magic and everything coexisting with Camelot etc. I would so love that.
Oh, thanks for quoting back the dialogue. That was a strong part for me to write because I think that's probably how Merlin feels sometimes. And with Hunith he could be honest. I love his scenes with Hunith, had to include her.
Thank you so much...such beautiful feedback, filled my heart with happiness. <3

And the way that their judgement felt was....ugh, powerful and excrutiating.
And that scene with Mordred was amazing too. You totally captured how interesting and ambiguous he is in the show.
And of course, I loved Gwen in this.
Basically I loved the whole thing Mara! Lol, good job.

That and the Gwen scene, maybe the Mordred scene too, were some of my favorites to write of this.
Oh and the Disir were so cool, had to include them!
I know. I love the show, you know, but I felt parts were missing and so the way to deal with it for me is always to write.
Hee, I was thinking of you when I did the Merlin Gwen scene, thinking of your fic too and how well you write them together.
Thank you!

Or should I not tell you?
Ah, thanks so much. Got emotional some while writing it. And it was healing to write something after that episode because so much seemed unfinished with poor Merlin. Often does. Even though I otherwise enjoyed the ep and Colin was stellar.
