Summary: A black out and a fierce storm leaves Central Headquarters stranded in a blackout to listen to lightning and thunder. Alphonse freaks out along the way.

Storm

Lightning crashed outside the window in Central Headquarters. There had also been a blackout, and the storm was too bad for anyone to leave by car or foot. The wind howled, battering the trees and bushes this way and that; the streets were deserted. Candles and lanterns were lit in various parts of the office, and everyone in the Colonel’s jurisdiction was there. The door was closed, and nobody went in, or out. Havoc, Fuery and Breda played a game of poker by the light of a lantern on the floor, Riza watching over them fro her seat on a table. She polished her many handguns while she supervised the game, making sure that nobody cheated. Roy, and Falman, of all people, were discussing on military ethics and rules, while debating on various other political matters. Edward and Alphonse sat against the couch, on the floor.

The thunder boomed, and the lightning struck once again, brief flashes of light throwing highlights and foreboding shadows into the room before retreating once again. There was a loud whimper, and the shudder of metal. A blanket of silence settled upon the office members as they tried to find out who made the sound. Metal was usually associated with the Elric brothers, but the two of them had no lamp in their near vicinity. There was another loud crash, a frantic wail made itself present, before sinking back into the darkness. There was another clink of metal, and the sound of shifting fabric. There were several shushing noises, and Havoc set down his cards, his eyebrow furrowed in concern. Riza slid the gun parts together with an ominous click, before shoving the gun into its holster. She stole the lantern that basked the card game, ignoring the small sound of protest that arose from Breda, and guided herself over to Edward and Alphonse.

There was another crash, another boom, and There was a loud clatter of metal, and a sob reverberated about the room.

“Al…it’s okay…..” Riza set the lantern on the floor again. The Elric brothers became illuminated underneath the scrutiny of the lantern’s bright flame. Edward was before his younger brother on his knees, and Al was kneeling with his feet tucked under him. The red coat had slipped down to Edward’s shoulders, and his undercoat had been discarded on the floor, his flesh arm bared to the light.

A leather gauntlet was clenched in Edward’s tank top tightly, and the armor’s different parts seemed to shake, and Alphonse would let loose a whimper every so often. Edward’s gloved hand caressed the top of Al’s helmet tenderly, and he whispered to him gently.

“It’s okay…you’re big brother’s here……I’ll protect you okay? Don’t worry…shhhh. Don’t cry Al. Don’t cry. Shhh…there, that’s a good boy…..okay….relax. That’s it…”

No one was about to point out that Alphonse could not physically cry. They were spellbound, unable to look away. This was something that they ever saw, this pure, unconditional affection that so held the Elric brothers together. No body had ever seen Edward like this, never so tender, so gentle. The thunder crashed, pronged lightning lit the sky. Alphonse tried to bury his head into Edward’s shoulder, but the older brother deftly avoided the large metal spike that came from the helmet, and wrapped his arms about the large armor fully.

“Nii-san! I’m…I’m…sca-scared…!”

“I know Al…I know…it’s okay……”

Edward clung closely to his little brother, and leaned forward, brushing his lips against the place where Alphonse’s own mouth would’ve been, his eyes closed. He sat back, and looked at his borther straight in the eye.

“Alphonse, I love you. I’m not going to let anything hurt you…so it’s okay. It’s okay, because I’m always going to be here, and I’ll always be here to protect you. Because that’s what older brothers do.”

Threading their hands together, he smiled kindly, and this time, when the thunder crashed, Alphonse wasn’t scared at all.
