generally irritating news from across the border

In the interest of focusing on the positive, I'll start with some good news: I had a comparatively enjoyable assignment at work last week. I'm about finished with a major-ish sewing project, and I got a neat new coat.

But most of the news is bad. To wit:

1. The garbage strike is over. Huzzah? After 88 (88!) days, I'm disgusted with all of them: the City, the Union, the middens everywhere. Be glad you're not here to see it.

2. Meanwhile, the public libraries are still closed because the librarians decided to strike alongside the garbage workers, but on a different set of issues, which are nowhere near resolved. They're talking about remaining on strike into 2008.

3. One of our beloved cats has moved next door. Apparently he does this pretty often, goes into other people's houses, sleeps on their beds, etc. Our house has a picture window facing straight into the neighbors' picture window across a very narrow yard, and we can see him moving around in there. We are unloved.

4. I've lost a significant amount of respect for one of my favorite authors. "Til We Have Faces" is probably my favorite book of all time, I love "The Screwtape Letters," but I've given them an unpleasant aftertaste by sloughing through "That Hideous Strength." The kernal of the story is intriguing, which is why I followed it through to the end, but the execution is terrible. He gets bogged down with unsympathetic characters, boring and/or implausable psychodrama, and interminable trivialities, and hangs it all around some antiquated views on gender that I can't support. Bleh.

5. The dollars are no longer par. This is bad news. The wrong one's on top!
