Interesting weekend: I had what you might call a "blind date" on Friday night. She's a fiercely intelligent pop culture scholar at UT who also dabbles in rugby. We talked about academia a bunch, and whether the researcher should insert their personal narrative into their work (I say no; she says absolutely). We also discussed the role of intention in art, which was a conversation I've wanted to have for some time. Again, we disagreed. Overall, a pleasant enough conversation, but after my first beer, I was ready to leave. It just wasn't "there." Big surprise.

During our "date," Ashton, a co-worker at [data embargo] stopped by our table. The last time I saw/spoke to him was the day before I was "released." It was good to hear that my former officemates didn't think of me as a giant loser, and in fact were all pretty confused as to why I left. Yeah, me too. We made tentative plans to play some ultimate frisbee next week.

Saturday, I spent the afternoon running 1,001 errands that'd been piling up on my brain. And then that night, I went to the Spoon show at Stubb's with a friend. The show was pretty damn good, though I must say: live Spoon is best in a small setting. At Stubb's, I felt pretty disconnected from the sounds. And I felt like my friend wasn't into the thing ... at all. Ran into Coon, an old college friend, and it was good being ridiculous with him. God bless anyone willing to indulge my dorkiness. After the show, had an awkward conversation and went to sleep. Fun.

Sunday was great. I watched almost all of the fifth season of The Sopranos. Plus, I destroyed some motherfuckers on the basketball court. I'm finally getting back into summer shape, which is a great feeling. I'm more energetic, thus making me more eager to work out again, which makes me more energetic, which makes me want to work out again. It's a glorious cycle.

Oh, and I wrote two new poems, one of which I think is one of the better things I've ever written. That's a sorely missed, and wonderfully welcome, feeling.

This weekend is the Southwest Shootout (more later on that) and my best college friend, Jay, is coming into town from D.C. He's bringing a female friend of his, Ramsey, and Wayne, my precious nemesis from U.T. It's going to be a hoot of a weekend: tons of insults, a trip up Enchanted Rock, and certainly some vodka. Certainly some vodka.

Wish us luck.
