Briefly observed

David Halberstam, an apparently stunning journalist, died tonight in Menlo Park (cursed place) just off the Dumbarton Bridge. Someone ran a light. Either that or the graduate student driving him made a run through a yellow, and the car was smashed. And here I was thinking that the Bay Bridge was the unsafe one...

I'm going through a NIN renewal. I had forgotten just how dynamic those old albums are, and how much, despite the tacky midi sound of Pretty Hate Machine, Trent Reznor is still an awesome songwriter, even if his lyrics are still rather melodramatic. But the layers of sound are still just fantastic, dynamic and wonderfully varied. Nice to come back to an old band and still have respect for them.

There are a few articles in last weeks (April 16th) New Yorker that are much more worthwhile than most ( I usually don't have the patience to make it through much that they publish in that magazine). The articles are: There and Back Again and The Train to Tibet. Perhaps My First Passport will be an interesting read, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

I wanted to read The Road by Cormac McCarthy, but it's due back at the library tomorrow. Drat. Only 40 pages of White Noise left...
