First day of month-long tour of jury duty

Aug 04, 2008 13:20

First day of jury duty this morning. After arriving at about 8:15, I sat with other unfortunates in the ice cold "lounge" until about 9:30. Then we were "welcomed" by a nice lady judge and we were told how much they appreciated our participation, as if we all would have willingly shown up without the threat of arrest and fines. Our attention was directed to the LED countdown clock on the wall. It begins with 12 and counts down. Once it reaches zero, we are no longer needed and we can go. It sat on 9 for most of the morning, then dwindled to zero in the space of about 15 minutes. No one was called for a jury. We all sat in the lounge and drank shitty coffee and listened to each other's phone conversations for almost 4 hours. At zero, it was like being in school when the last bell rang. Everyone jumped up and hauled ass. I rode the bus back with the rest of the miscreants from the hood and then treated myself to lunch at Slice.

I get to do this SEVEN more times this month.
