Oh God, I think I'm getting addicted to energy drinks. So bad for me, yet they make me feel so good.

Vienna was just what the doctor ordered. I got to see my dear friend and crash in her friend's room (with a bed twice the size of mine!). Recommendations: Eberts Cocktail Bar for the most delicious and far-out cocktails I've ever had (their list runs 30+ pages, I think); Chelsea for good music and dancing; MuseumsQuartier for chillaxing, people too hip to be alive, and cool contemporary art; Kunsthistorisches Museum for insane amounts of treasures stolen from Eastern Europe and Greece; Augustine for delicious Austrian food and palatschinken (crepes) to die for.

As you can see, the trip was a perfect mix of culture and hedonism.

Now, I'm preparing for my seven weeks in Greece, Italy, and Turkey. Dion is a glorious archaeological site with way too many remains for me to write about. They also have an amazing website, which is unique for Greece: www.ancientdion.org

I'm crashing at a friend's place (who incidentally is not at home but in Russia right now) in a sort of seedy area of town. I don't normally take the metro, but I have for the past few days, and it's such an interesting place for people-watching. Yesterday night I saw a young man bleeding from his face. Before that, I saw a young couple kissing in a way so intimate I wanted to cover them up. Not dirty, but with more feeling than you're supposed to show in public. She reached her hand to cover his face, and when they broke up and he left the metro, she stared down at her lap. Maybe she was slightly embarrassed by opening up like that in public. Maybe she was just bored and anti-social. They looked so serious I wondered if they kissed out of duty or if they're so in love they can't help but take everything about each other seriously.

I wonder why it's so much easier to talk about ear fetishes and hairy toes than it is to say, "Hey, I kind of like you". So many things left unsaid, so many people pulled apart by time because we can't muster the courage to hold hands tight. Maybe that's just serial monogamy played at double speed. Sometimes I feel I've experienced a thousand romances, all in brief whispers and looks and dreams. Most days, it's enough.

Life is good. Mew is better. They make me want to cry with how beautiful their music is. You can listen to their entire new album on MySpace: www.myspace.com/mew

Peace and love,
Elina

Dion was a Macedonian centre for the cult of Olympian Zeus (among others). It flourished under Philip II, Alexander the Great, and Cassander, and again starting under Augustus.
