The dangers of self-sufficiency

Ryan has gotten to the point where he dresses himself in the morning. The only things he might occasionally need some help with are some of the tougher varieties of buttons. He'll ask me whether it's a long sleeve or short sleeve day and choose appropriately. He claims he likes long pants now, on the couple of days I've recommended he might want to wear shorts. It's not high summer yet, so I was fine with his decision to still go with jeans on those days. So a few nights ago, it's time to jump into the bath. Both of them are pretty good at the getting *out* of clothes, so they were dismissed to go strip and put their dirties in their hampers and report for bathing. As the water is running, Ryan comes running in wearing his shirt and nothing more and is laughing "Mommy!" he says "I forgot to put on my underwear for school today!"

O.o

It's a good thing he can handle all aspects of going potty these days, otherwise...Awkward! Pointed questions might have ensued!

Anyway, other goings on.

Last night was the Parent's Night at Ryan's Kindergarden. Our friend G kindly (bravely?) agreed to hang out with the childrens so hubby and I could both attend. We tossed "Enchanted" into the DVD and left them glued to the TV while G made himself comfy with his book at the breakfast table. We filed into the school auditorium/cafeteria along with a couple hundred of our kindred owners of almost-Ks. It was interesting how many seemed to know each other "Oh hi - looks like our whole block is here!" I heard. Hubby and I are the social pariahs I guess. The only other children of R&R's age on our block are homeschooled. There are a couple of very young ones and a fair number more of ones that are at least several years older than Ryan. We are it for the 3&5 year old crowd.

We listened to the teachers gather uncomfortably on stage and recite a silly but cute and sincere poem. We listened to the principal oratize. We heard testimonials from a couple of parents whose children started K last fall (My shrinking violet opened up, my go getter went and got). The PTA president bragged about their budget (well...duh - very affluent area!) and urged involvement. And then we broke up into color coded small groups to go into some of the classrooms and get a powerpoint presentation on various kinds of fun things the children would be doing throughout the year. It ranged from the traditional (sports day) to the offbeat (Q&U get married!) and just plain silly (Green toilet water for St. Patrick's day!). We heard about how the classes themselves help cook lunch every week or two, how the bug guy with the ginormous bugs comes every year, and how they get a older child "mentor" to read with. They let you buy your school supplies through them so that your child has all the stuff they recommend - we went ahead and did that. And they had school branded bottles of water and yummy soft cookies to treat you to. It went a little past the scheduled 7-8 PM, so we hurried home to see if G had survived.

The movie was just ending. He said they'd been superb - very quiet and totally absorbed with the movie. (Really?!?) He headed home and we stuffed a quick dinner into them. By then it was time for bed, so that dance started. It was way *past* their bedtime by the time they were actually *in* beds. We folded some clothes, played a bit of WoW, watched Lost. Lost seems to have given up on the "Scientifically Sound" idea and just haring off into the fantastic. Which isn't to say it's less enjoyable, it definately remains captivating. It's always required a little suspension of disbelief, just needs a little more now.

So - it's gorgeous outside now. I was blah this morning but driving to/from lunch with the sunroof open and windows down, playing the radio too loud, and the sun shining down and making my head uncomfortably hot did a lot to put me in a pleasant mood. Now when the clouds roll in, the sun sets, and the pager starts freaking out cause our Support center has no pattern recognition skills, I'm sure the sun induced buzz will fade quickly. But until then, I shall enjoy!

So AI: Again proving the popularity contest thing. Jason did ok the first song and sucked badly...really badly on the second. But he's safe! David A. doesn't have the right kind of voice for Neil Diamond songs. At All. David C. Enjoyed him the most, as usual. Syesha - not my favorite but I admit it when she does well, and she did well. And poor Brook...I liked the first song and the second was very well done, but home she went. Booo! She did make it farther than I thought she would though.

On tap for the weekend: Clean house and laundry - Grandparents are coming! My Mom will be here Monday for a few days, and hubby's parents will be here the following week for the first of their bi-annual vists.
