You know the way sometimes you read a character story, and you know it's forever going to be the definitive last word on that character?
Well, I've found it for John Winchester. It's STUNNING.
Even if you hate John, with the fire of a thousand suns, go read it. Seriously.

I'm fairly new to SPN -- havewatched it when I can, and caught the finalse ... and this fic? I'm craving it now, and have to see every minute. That's the bestthing you can say about a fic, isn't it?
Thanks againfor turning me on to this.

I just finished reading it. Because of that it's way past my normal bedtime now, but I forgive you (I'm having a day off tomorrow, so no worries).
And boy, this story just blows me away! This is John, the true John, under all those layers of hurt, hate and vengance that he's been wearing for so long. I ache for the loss of this wonderful man.
I ache too for Sam never having seen this side of his dad and I realize that Dean is the lucky one for having these memories of better times.
To me it perfectly explains Dean's fierce loyalty to his dad and Sam's questioning of everything John does. It kinda reminds me of the relationship me and my brother have with our dad. I'm the Dean in that one and my brother is the Sam.
Okay, enough rambling. I need to seriously get myself some shut eye, before I keel over and sleep with my head on my keyboard (and wouldn't that be the proof of my internet addiction?).
Thanks again for bringing this to my attention.

It makes me ache to think of what their lives could have been.

Thank you so much for this rec. This story was such a rush for me to write, and you have so embraced it as speaking exactly the way I was hoping it would speak.
And I'm so utterly jealous, because I wish I'd written it.
You could pay me no greater compliment. Thank you.

Seriously, the story has just stayed with me today - and it's been a hell of a day - got me through it without cracking.
I wish everyone could read this story - it's everything you intended - John just becomes in it - it's like you've turned on a light in a dark room and everyone can see who he is for the first time.
And how much do I love the notion that you imagined pre-demon-destroyed John as Dean (married with kids) That does things to my insides that shouldn't be allowed. *g*
Thank you for writing this. *hugs story hard*

This is the best compliment ever. Seriously. Ever.

So funny you state it this way. I just told someone that John becomes who we see on the show because, in killing Mary, the Demon turns off the only light in John's world.
:D

Mine, too. Thoughts like that should be criminal, shouldn't they? But at least John's a little closer to my frakkin age. And explaining a slightly older man rather than a much younger man is always easier to do. LOL

I did..I did..LOL! And everything you said about it is true..a wonderful characterization of John. That
>> But you and me," John went on, "we know the drill. Bad dreams can be tricky stuff. Always a good idea to debrief after you’ve had one. Talk about it a little. Figure out what put it in your head and how to get it out, right?"
whole scene was to die for..couldn't have loved him more at that point *G*
Thank you for pointing the way :-)

And I'm still filled with awe at this portrayal of John. The image of him and wee!Dean debriefing the bad dream will stay with me for a very long time. *sigh*
