Tsunami Alert

Feb 28, 2010 09:31

It seems remarkable that an earthquake of M8.8 could trigger off a tsunami which has gone racing across half the globe. Hawaii is officially danger-free as the tsunami is headed for Japan. The Russian coast is also in danger while the Philippines have also issued an alert. As of now Japan is mainly in focus, the first waves are expected to hit it around 1pm today and later. Waves are expected to be anything from 1.5 to 3m high while the second and third waves will be more dangerous and people have been advised to be careful.

At least the systems put in place to warn of tsunamis have worked and people will not be caught unawares. That in itself is a big plus after the destruction wreaked in December 2004. Hopefully this will all pass without loss of lives. The countdown has started, I hope it will not be a major disaster.

Sitting here safely in B'lore, I feel awed by whats happening, it is scary. What must those people be thinking who are actually there in Japan, knowing a tsunami is headed their way. I don't know anything about water dynamics etc, so all I can wish for is that this passes.
