Gackt has got to be the dumbest, most inutile made-up pseudo-Western name in all of j-popdom. And I don't get his whole androgynous thing. (Maybe it's just his take on David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust phase?) Then again, theatrical gender-bending isn't all that crazy coming from the culture that invented kabuki.
Another thing I don't get is slash. See, I like imported cartoons with giant robots. A lot. Way much more than an adult should, probably. So when one joins an LJ community about one of these fandangled japanese robot toons, it's natural to expect talk about the robots, right? And maybe an occasional musing on how robots are a projection of alienation for today's Japanese youth, or a form of wishful thinking for a former military titan, or an expression of a generation's ambivalence for WWII. So there's some of that on the community. But there's more of "which male character is yummiest." Excuse me? And then there's the "which male character pairing is best" thing. Huh? Why do girls -- I got no hard statistics, but it seems mostly girls are into this -- like to imagine two guy characters getting their love on?
Went to see Constantine with Mark, John and Corb this afternoon at Bella Bo'. I came in with low expectations because of the 45% score it got on rottentomatoes.com, so was I surprised how much I actually enjoyed it. We did MST3K it a bit at the start (when the camera first showed Keanu, I said "time for some acting" which got a few snickers), but once the movie got rolling it's hard not to get caught up. Good action, good effects, bits of humor, Rachel Weisz, it's all good. Keanu still can't act, but he doesn't have to for most of the movie.
Went to Coho's afterwards for some hefeweizens and coffee (of course). I should talk to John more, he's the only one who shares my MI-5 habit. Aagh!!! MI-5!!! A friend once warned me about British dramas -- unlike American TV, actors can go at any moment. Even ones who appear at the very beginning of the credits. It seems as character arcs are driven by story quality, not whether the actors have a contract or not. Several episodes into the second season, and two of the three main characters from the first season are already gone. The unpredictability is really refreshing compared to American TV.
Sunday was a nice warm day, my first go-out-in-a-T-shirt day this year. Nice.
