New Year's Resolutions

I don't do them as a rule, because I know I rarely make it out of January before I fail in an epic manner.

This year, however, I hope I can stay the course.

We are good cooks. I don't think I am being immodest in saying that. We like to eat well, therefore we take time to cook.

Cooking is pretty evenly divided. DB obviously is the main Chinese cook, but he is also the one who barbecues, the one who roasts, and a good French cook. I am responsible for English traditional food, Italian, Indian, all baking and desserts, and also like cooking side dishes. We normally work as a team.

That said, I am conscious of the fact that we have a certain repertoire of dishes acquired over the thirty some years we have been eating together, and that it is fairly static. So, my new year resolution is to try new recipes - at least one a week. I am trying to convince DB that he should embrace this, too, but as yet he remains unconvinced.

Tonight, we had DB's Coq au Vin (which is classic and delicious, with rice for him {wheat intolerant} and angel hair pasta for the teen and for me) and I made Gordon Ramsay's creamed cabbage. We had eaten this in his London restaurant a couple of years ago, but had forgotten about it until we happened in an idle moment to watch The F Word where he served it. So, I decided to give it a go.

You know you're on to a winner when the teen starts eating it before the rest of his meal is served, making soft moaning noises.
