i'll take the high-side

i just wiped out on my bike.

the weather was nice and superrice and i decided to take a ride into the country.  it is harder to do these days what with greedy developers casting suburban sprawl at odds with greedier resource companies planting gas wells across the landscape.  when i first moved to this area, it was nothing but cow pastures and rolling grassland.  people used to ride their horses up and down the street next to my home.  times were simpler then when a couple of kids could walk down the road with a bb gun looking suspiciously like an ar-15 and the only thing a passing cop would say was to "get off the road".

now it's harder and harder to find the cows.  it's harder to find the grassy plains.  there is nothing but pavement and drilling rigs to be seen.  our search for serenity and solitude forces longer and longer treks over iffier pavement.  and still i couldn't get away.

some old guy took a turn at an intersection without looking.  i tried to brake but there was too much dust and gravel on the road from all the tanker trucks coming out of the fields.  i almost saved it until he tapped the back side of my bike and i took a trip over the high side.  years of mountain biking experience took over and tried to curl up and clear myself of the bike.  first the bike ate it, then i did, rolling as much as i could to dissipate the energy.  my shoulder slammed the road and then my head.  my leather jacket and helmet took the brunt of the impact.

i've had harder hits in my skateboarding career, but still my shoulder aches.  i just pounded some ibuprofen.  now i'm going to have beer.

the only things i lament: 1) i just got the fucker out of the shop and 2) i'm on deep night call tonight.

[edit: thank you, nick and your big bad truck for being kind enough to stop and help a brother. i have faith in the kindness of others again. you rock.

surprises, oh crap, one handed surgery, hurt, ow ow ow
