I've always wondered what Shrove Tuesday was. I didn't realize it is the day before lent. (a.k.a. "Fat Tuesday" here in the states). Or "Mardis Gras" in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
I first learned of it in a Red Dwarf sketch. As follows:
Rimmer: "Mayday! Mayday! ... I wonder why it's Mayday? It's only a bank holiday. Why not Shrove Tuesday or Ascension Sunday? ... Ascension Sunday! Ascension Sunday!.... Fifteenth Wednesday after Pentacost, Fifteenth Wednesday after Pentacost!"
Lister: "It's French, you doink! M'aidez, ME - AID - EZ! It means "help me!"
