Hey, guys? Y'know that Kony 2012 thing?
It's probably not legit.
Where does the Invisible Children charity's money go?
From CharityNavigator.org, a charity review site:
Program Expenses 80.5%
Administrative Expenses 16.2%
Fundraising Expenses 3.2%
Fundraising Efficiency $0.02
Primary Revenue Growth 23.3%
Program Expenses Growth 6.3%
Program Expenses: 80.5%. 80.5% of their money goes right back into the charity itself.
It won't give the Better Business Bureau (bbb.org) its information so they can review its spending. Givewell.org also can't find evidence that these guys are doing what they say they're doing. As well, one of the suggestions that Google gives you when you type "Kony 2012" is "Kony 2012 scam," which is a little shady. Enough people are dubious about it that one of the high-rated related Google searches involves checking if it's a scam. Type in the name of a known, legit charity; that doesn't happen.
The video is heartwrenching and appeals to emotion rather than logic, and the organization asking for your money doesn't like to say what they're spending that money on. As well, instead of taking it to media and news outlets, they're asking you to spread this information by word of mouth. Highly suspicious.
