HOUSE 7X04 MASSAGE THERAPY & Castle 3x04 Punked

Oct 13, 2010 04:23

I've already got an icon of the adorablest moment of this latest episode of House, but I'm gonna try and be good and not spoil people RIGHT AWAY. ANYWAYS. It's 2.51am right now and I am STUPID for still being awake, but I'm gonna talk about House and Castle a little bit before going to sleep. HOW COULD I NOT. I'm not live-blogging or anything though - no time, so hopefully this post will be shorter. It's certainly going to be more impressionistic.... and strangely enough, I don't think it'll be in capslock. Not because the House/Cuddy interaction wasn't amazing, but because it was... more grown-up? UNLIKE CASTLE LOLOOLOL I loved this episode! Okay, more below the cut.

House first! Getting the boring stuff out of the way - like the rest of the episode - I thought it was okaaaay. The patient was nowhere near as riveting or intriguing to me as Alice Tanner was last week, which I think is proof (for myself as much as anyone) that I can still get interested in the POTW even when my brain is basically squeeing at the rate of five times per second waiting for the next House/Cuddy scene. This patient wasn't... as intriguing, although I DID like that moment when she thought the table behind House was on fire, and House slammed his hand down among the flames. Nice effects/moment there. I DID like the parallels the schizo POTW and her husband had with House and Cuddy though - both because the POTW is a legit mental patient, as House once was, and also because their relationship again mirrors House and Cuddy's: the question of course being whether they are willing to stick with each other when things get real, when they get serious and the truth comes out. For House and Cuddy, it was little moments of truth and insecurity, a lot worse for the POTW's husband. I loved that moment at the end when House was, like, I can give you any number of reasons to leave her - but it's hard, and it's always going to be hard, to be in a real, committed, serious relationship - with problems you might never have signed up for, with a person you thought you knew but actually don't.

Urm, back to House/Cuddy later. Team dynamics... I actually thought having Kelly what's-her-face on the team for a week provided some interesting insights into the team. First off, House is STILL A JACKASS. OMG he was SO MEAN! I loved that - love hasn't softened him one bit when it comes to his team and their intelligence (or lack thereof). Awkward AWKWARD scene when he pulled a chair up and had her sit across from him, and said the entire JOB was a test. OMG so true, he is basically testing them all the time, he's so scary!! Favourite moment? House pulling out that picture of little baby Chase and his mom. LOLOLOL OMG. Oedipal much, Dr Robert?! I LOVE how House keeps enabling Chase in the latter's quest to become PPTH's Biggest Manwhore. He was willing to keep Kelly on another week to help Chase score, wtf!!!

Otherwise, I do not know what they are doing to Chase in terms of having him play every field in this continent and the next. I did like his smackdown of Foreman, though... did I REALLY need another episode to remind me that Foreman is a self-centred, arrogant jerk who thinks he's better than everyone else (but isn't, really?). A+++ Chase for calling him out on his behaviour, although I don't think Chase himself had much of a leg to stand on this episode given that he really DID seem to have hired Kelly on the basis of her beauty and not her brains after all.

I have to say that having Kelly on the team was painful - it must be so tragic to sit there in the presence of so many great minds (because you have to have a great mind to still be surviving anywhere near House and his Circle Of Disdain), and KNOW that you're less intelligent, and that you're cheating to keep up. Ick. Not fun.

WOW HEY, guess who had more to say about the rest of the episode than she thought she did?!!? ANYWAYS, on to House/Cuddy! I have to say I am OBSESSED with the way the writers are really, properly addressing this relationship. It's beautiful - the progression is lovely, going from that very first episode of the season when they decide to commit (deep, profound, powerful) through to the first flush of romance coupled with the problems they had in returning to work... and then 7x03, in which you realise they CAN function, perfectly well, in the workplace, even though he still has some insecurities about whether he can give her what she thinks she wants (deserves). And with this episode, we move into rather more complex territory, and I LOVED IT. I love that this episode made clear that Cuddy still DOES have huge, enormous reservations about being with House and letting him in completely, no matter how she's tried to reassure him that she's never been happier. Because she knows all that stuff, and she believes it, but when she has to protect her daughter and maybe even her own heart - she still holds back, at least that tiny little bit.

I LOVE that the writers let us know how the relationship has progressed since the start - presumably we're about a month or so in, and they're still just having sex at House's place and dates/dinners out. I love even more the fact that this actually bothers House - though he claims the opposite, of course, when he's out buying a new motorcycle with Wilson. I thought it was obvious from that scene how he HAS thought about it, and worried about the fact that Cuddy hasn't brought him to her house yet, or properly introduced him to Rachel. Even before he brought it up in that oh-so-angsty conversation with her later in the episode, it was obvious he felt it. I really liked the way the episode (post-preamble) opened on House in bed, alone, and he realises that there's no one next to him. The first time the camera does that, he is not unhappy, and he stretches out across the bed that is his alone. The second time, you can see the reservations in his eyes - that Cuddy isn't with him, and... does he WANT her to be with him? Does he want it to be more serious, to wake up with her and everything in her world next to him?

The hooker massage thing was HILARIOUS and AWESOME. Because we ended up getting what I'd hoped for - Cuddy being jealous of Brandi (I actually think she has a legit concern here, even though House would in my opinion never cheat on her - he's a romantic and a monogamist), but also that this jealousy is actually masking what really IS a problem between them. The Felipe scene was SO HILARIOUS, although after I got to think twice about it, I really want to slap House for getting a male hooker to come massage his girlfriend. OMG. Because she's right - his attempt to draw a parallel doesn't work because HE slept with Brandi, and she's not slept with and never will sleep with Felipe. God, I would be SO OFFENDED if I were Cuddy, but apparently she just puts up with crap like this. *weeps* It still made for a hilarious scene and subsequent naked!Cuddy though, so SURPRISE SURPRISE, I'm okay with it in the end. XD

As I'd said on Tumblr, I have three reasons to love this scene:
1. Cuddy’s ”BITCH, PLEASE” face (see cap, top right)
2. LOL value - Felipe and his accent are SO FUNNY!
3. More seriously: House knows Cuddy so well that he can script an entire conversation with her before it even takes place. Awwww. Favourite. ♥

But then but then but then the writers went and gave us that AMAZING scene in which they called each other out about the reservations they still have about their relationship. And the more I watch it, the more I'm, like, oof. Genius. So true to life, and the characters, and so perfect and deliciously ANGSTY. Quoting the scene:

House: Oh, c’mon, it’s a massage! I don’t care who gives it to you! Why not treat me the same way?
Cuddy: I’m sure that some part of you believes this idiocy. But you can’t possibly be stupid enough to think that you can convince any part of me. And that can only mean you’re trying to sabotage this relationship.
House: Why would I do that? We’re doing fine!
Cuddy: Because the next step from fine is serious, and you can’t handle that so you’re trying to keep me at arm’s length with all this crap.
House: How about you?
Cuddy: I’ve been completely open with you.
House: You won’t let me sleep over. You basically haven’t introduced me to your daughter.
Cuddy: But do you want to spend time with her?
House: Honestly… before this I’d have said no. But… yeah. How are we ever gonna be a couple if you keep hiding her from me?
Cuddy: House… I need to protect her. I let you into her life and then you go away…
House: Call it what it is. I’m not the only one who’s holding back.

Just LOOK at that. We got all the crazy, screwed-up romance that only these two can muster in the first three episodes - from butt-grabbing to yelling at each other in front of a patient's family - and then you get this crazy-awesome, grown-up conversation about the things they MUST address before their relationship will move from "fine" to "serious". I LOVE that the show is choosing to REALLY stick with this, and not give the relationship and the characters and their commitment to each other short shrift. What I enjoy is that House and Cuddy have in all of the previous episodes made very clear how much they WANT their relationship to work, how much they want to try - the issue is how to make that happen. And now we have this episode, in which they're starting to dance around these very issues that will make them a real "couple". Everything about the scene I quoted is just genius. Cuddy's claim to be "completely open" - so very much Cuddy's brand of rationalisation. Not a lie, per se, but her version of why and how she's doing something - it has allowed her to supervise House all these years, pretending she's not bending rules when she plainly is, and now it's allowing her to think she's completely open with him. Until he's the one - and this is essential - until HE'S the one to step up to the plate and say - these are the things you are keeping back from me. If you want to be a real couple... don't we have to change that? OMIGOD IT'S SO AMAZING.

And then, of course, the best thing is that he DOES. He gives in to her on the massage therapist, he's the one who says - okay, Cuddy, for reals I am all in now. Let's do it. OOF.

Isn't this scene - and this OTP - INTENSELY PRETTY?!!?

Also, ONLY this ship is gonna get away with dialogue like this and have it be the most romantic thing ever:

Cuddy: I will get you the name. Let’s stay at my place tonight, okay?
House: Will you get cable?
Cuddy: No.
House: Then we’ll have to have more sex.
Cuddy: Okay.

I CANNOT EXPRESS IN WORDS HOW MUCH I LOVE HOUSE AND CUDDY RIGHT NOW. JUST BELIEVE THAT I DO.

And this, of course, leads to that moment when he IS at her house, eating dinner with her and Rachel, and I thought - awwww. How sweet that he's trying, and don't they look like a family already:

Of course, the show wouldn't be the show if it didn't close on House's EXTREMELY APPREHENSIVE face as he contemplates a future that includes Rachel Cuddy. But it's adorable. AND REAL. And I can't wait to see where it goes next!

Okay, now that I've waxed lyrical about the House/Cuddy relationship - and I don't even think I've said anything near enough about it - I'm gonna highlight some of the adorableness in this episode. THIS ENTIRE SCENE WAS MY FAVOURITE:

AND SO THE CAPSLOCK STARTS UP, AS WE ALL KNEW IT WOULD. INEVITABLE.

TO WIT:
- CUDDY IN A BRA. HNNNNNNNNNNNNNG SO GAY RIGHT NOW. SERIOUSLY WHAT KIND OF PRETTY PILLS IS LISA EDELSTEIN POPPING, SHE IS EXTRA GORGEOUS THIS SEASON AND IT'S NOT LIKE SHE WASN'T SUPER GORGEOUS TO BEGIN WITH.
- HEY YOU KNOW HOW MOST PEOPLE SMOKE AFTER SEX, OR EAT CAVIAR OR HAVE MASSAGES OR WHATEVER. MY OTP PLAYS VIDEO GAMES. THEY'RE TOTES ON THE SAME TEAM.
- ALSO I HAVE SUCH AN ENORMOUSLY DIRTY MIND. CUDDY'S 'TIRED WRISTS' COMMENT TOTALLY HAD ME THINKING ABOUT... URM, OTHER ACTIVITIES BEFORE I REALISED THEY WERE PLAYING VIDEOGAMES.
- SPEAKING OF WHICH: IN-JOKE, IT'S THE VIDEO GAME THE DUCKLINGS WERE TESTING IN AN EPISODE FROM AN EARLIER SEASON, NO? THE REAL-PERSON SHOOTER GAME?
- HUGH IS ALSO SUPER-SEXY.
- THIS SHIP IS RIDICULOUS AMOUNTS OF SEXY AND GOOD-LOOKING AND I JUST LIKE SEEING THEM BATHED IN POST-COITAL GLOW.
- CUDDY'S LINE IS MY FAVOURITE: "And it was at that moment she realised the romance was already gone." ILU AND YOUR ADORABLE SNARKINESS, LISA CUDDY.
- ALSO THIS KISS. OMG OMG I AM KIND OF OBSESSED WITH IT. IT'S SO CUTE, THE WAY SHE LEANS IN TO KISS HIM GOODBYE AND HE SORTA KISSES BACK BUT IS STILL PLAYING HIS GAME. OMG THEY'RE SO COMFORTABLE WITH EACH OTHER NOW IT'S KIND OF AMAZING AND PERFECT. DLFHKSDLHLDFHLSFSDLFHLSFS I LOVE IT.

AND NOW I HAVE TO SHARE THIS, EVEN THOUGH I DIDN'T MAKE IT, BECAUSE THE KID PLAYING RACHEL CUDDY IS SO FRICKIN' ADORABLE I CAN'T EVEN. WHEN SHE GNAWS ON HOUSE'S CANE... OMG. SO. FUCKING. CUTE.

My favourite thing? The caption: Like mother, like daughter. LOLOLOLOL OMIGOD HELL IN A HANDBASKET BUT SO TRUE FUNNY.

Augh did I say that would be SHORT? I should never believe myself again. Basically I SHOULD live-blog, because that keeps me more or less to the running length of the episode, it's now past 4am and I have to work later ack ack ack. D: But I do need to talk about Castle and HOW AWESOME IT WAS.

Completely random coincidence but I'd just watched some newly-released footage of Eric Stoltz - ERIC STOLTZ - as Marty McFly in Back To The Future... he worked on the movie for five weeks before they fired him and replaced him with Michael J Fox. I LOVE BACK TO THE FUTURE, GUYS, LIKE LOVE LOVE. ONE OF MY FAVOURITE MOVIES EVER. I don't know if we can be friends if you don't like it. :( So it was just such a nice segue into this Castle episode, because Castle actually spends AGES floating his time ripple theory and LOLOLOL I LOVE HIM IN EVERY WAY. HE IS JUST SO ADORABLE, AND GOOFY, AND SWEET AND FUNNY AND OMG IN LOVE WITH A FICTIONAL CHARACTER, WHAT IS MY LIFE. But I really lol-ed and squeed whenever he trotted out his theory to Beckett's trusty eyeroll. (All of the Castle gifs I'm linking to are not made by me, but they're on Tumblr.)

HIS ATTEMPT TO GET A HIGH-FIVE FOR HIS THEORY. LOLOLOL CASTLE ILU.

I LOVED THAT MOMENT WHEN HE TRIED IT AGAIN, AND BECKETT WAS, LIKE... SADLY I DON'T HAVE A BETTER THEORY AT THIS POINT. AHAHAHAHA. There are so many things about this episode and this show that I love. I LOVE HOW IT CHOOSES TO BE. Like the beginning, with the smorelette (what the eff!!), and Martha trying to distract Castle from thoughts of Alexis being in love by offering up a fresh new murder. ESPOSITO THE INVALID AHAHAHAHA. Lanie getting bitchy that they never bring her coffee! Dead squirrel! Forty paces! THE MOTHER-EFFIN' DELOREAN. CASTLE + STEAMPUNK SDFGHSLDHGLSDHFDLFS, like when he was dressed in that contraption, or when he brought the gun home and terrified Ashley, or when he could give the password to be allowed into the steampunk party and Beckett was, like, "NYPD, OPEN THE DAMN DOOR." Alexis being in love was ADORABLE, and her offer of a "pity date" right at the end totally made me tear, I AM SUCH A WUSS. Also, I hate to say it but Beckett's new boy - Josh - is insanely pretty. They look frickin' hot together.

Also makes this scene a little bit less awwww than it was for me (the diehard eternal shipper) on first viewing:

And omg now I really REALLY have to sleep, my brain and eyes are giving out. It's thundering outside. Wish I could sleep in all day...
