I know that all sorts of important animals go extinct everyday without anyone noticing, but I just tripped across this article saying that the Baijin River Dolphin is officially extinct. Not sure how reliable this info is (none found after a 6 week search...maybe they are all hiding with the unicorns?), but its sad just the same. Having existed in the Yangtze for 20 million years, it was one of four freshwater species in the world, it was one of the species believed to be impacted by the 3 Gorges projects...if there were enough of them to impact when it went up. I did a five page report in high school, in chinese, about the endangered dolphin and so...it matters to me.
