For your consideration: a piece about crews sent to clean out possessions left behind in foreclosed homes and house inspectors cleaning up deserted, algae-filled pools.
The house that they show still had lots of usable things, some of them rather valuable. It also had a big pile of family photographs lying on the ground. The owner of the company that conducts these "trash-outs" has attempted to coordinate with charities so that usable items might do someone else some good, but didn't have much success. Since the banks foreclosing on the houses require that nothing be left inside or at the curb, everything ends up in a landfill... or taken by one of the crew members.
Terribly sad... for some reason, this reinforces my desire to not accumulate crap.
