hey there! re. skywave, i went to read the pitchfork review & definitely agree that it is way derivative of j&mc + slowdive et al, but when you are working with them as your inspiration, who CARES how derivative it is? there is one track in particular on their synthstatic lp (track 4 i think, "nothing left to say") that is immensely channeling slowdive and it's just wonderful.
i did d/l "don't change" and how weird that after all these years i'd never heard it! in fact speaking of that same general timeframe (well kinda), i had this cool dream the night before last that i was inside depeche mode's "enjoy the silence" video-- you know the one where dave gahan is dressed up like a king and climbing mountains?
as for the journal find, i have to say that at first i felt guilty for having the pages in my possession when someone was most likely missing them, but in the end i guess i felt like hey--! at least someone found them who could somewhat appreciate them as opposed to them just getting tossed by some random p.o. employee. i just know that of all the letters & things i've lost, i'd feel at least a little better knowing someone had found them as opposed to them disintegrating in a landfill who knows where.
I still need to buy this skywave album! and like you say, it was pretty much because of the fact that the album seemed to be derivative of those bands that it made me want to go buy it. and hearing from someone who's heard it always helps. with these bands/sounds, I don't care how derivative it is either:)
I'm glad you finally heard "don't change." thats such a good one to turn up loud. I know that depeche mode video. were you climbing mountains too? I once had a dream that I went to see a movie and when I went to go sit down, simon gallup of the cure stood up in front of me. I shook his hand. then the cure played for us instead of a movie.
on losing things... its funny, because it was shortly after this when I lost my debit card.
