Come on ye variables, break the rules, dammit.

Dear Show,

Greetings from a fangirl. I hope this letter finds you well, and enjoying your 100th birthday. You don’t look a day over 90. I hope you received my gift of loyal viewership. Don’t worry, I kept the receipt because after the events of tonight’s episode, I'm no longer sure you wanted this present. However, as I’m used to your fickleness, I’m giving you one last chance, because surely, you did not just kill Daniel Faraday. If so your blood lust knows no bounds, and I’m afraid I will have to be done with you sooner rather than later. So let’s just be clear.

Despite your lousy track record, you managed to introduce an endearing character late in the game. I applaud you for this. Dear Daniel wormed his way into my heart with his tears and his twitches and his rambling about constants. Of course it helped that my heart was rather empty after you slaughtered so many of my other favourites, but I digress. So after we had established Dan as a critical and well loved player, you couldn’t, for pure shock value, have just let his mother kill him after he provided Jack and co. with all the key information they needed to save the world? (Oh yes, bravo for giving him mother issues, that is so original.) Faraday wore his skinny tie and bad flash back wigs like a champ and sprouted helpful exposition that filled in a lot of your plot holes. He deserved better than this. Surely Dan was more than a plot device to further the story?

So here are my predictions, the variables will cause a big mess, and by the end of the season, the past really will have changed, and the good Mr. Faraday will be on his feet somewhere, sometime, possibly along with some of long lost friends who have gone to their graves. Because this show is about breaking the rules and smashing destiny, not about going through the motions and mowing down pawns?

To be fair, I’m willing to make a sacrifice here, and believe that whatever happens will mean the last three years of the present have been altered, and that Desmond’s latest variation on his favourite promise to Penny will be reversed because whatever Jack and co. do to the timeline, Des will end up back on the island. This is tragic but acceptable because then you will have one season to make things right. I know you can do this show. Don’t make me regret sticking around.

Yours truly,
Me
