This is the tale of an ordinary man, who had everything...

I saw three movies this week; all about regular men who become extraordinary.

Iron Man - I’m not a big fan of comic book movies, save X-Men, and I’ve been dragged to enough lame ducks by my Marvel loving husband. Yet I was really charmed by Iron Man and Robert Downey Jr.’s performance. Even with its familiar origin storyline-ordinary man is changed by catastrophic event/wants to save the world-it seemed fresh, mainly because the man outside of the costume was more interesting than inside.

Sweeney Todd - I enjoyed this but didn’t love it. Again I was charmed by the leading man but too often I felt like I was watching Edward Scissorhands singing Company. I swear, I expected Depp and Rickman to break into The Ladies Who Lunch. What was up with Tony Head’s 3 second cameo?

The Visitor - A sweet movie about a man finding his little-used apartment in the city lived in by illegal immigrants. What could have been the typical uptight white man learns from third world wisdom was tempered by really genuine characters, good music and an unexpected ending. I was surprised to find this was directed by Thomas McCarthy who plays the ego chasing reporter on The Wire.

Also, a very happy birthday to
fosfomifira. I hope you can take a break from studying to celebrate!
