Happy International Women's Day! 100 years + 100 women=100 comments

Mar 08, 2011 10:23

Today is International Women's Day, an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in women's rights and acknowledge how much work is left toward the fight for equality.

Since it is IWD's 100th anniversary, I am inviting my flist to celebrate women by leaving a comment with the name of a fictional women from any realm (TV, books, movies, plays, comics, games) who means something to them and an explanation about why you are recognizing her. I had my students do this last night with real women. It was great to see a lot famous women remembered alongside moms and sisters!

So here's the deal: Leave a comment with your fictional women's name in the subject heading and in the comment space, tell us something about her. Feel free to comment as often as you like! One comment per woman! You are welcome to comment on other people's choices. If someone already mentioned your choice(s), try to add someone new. My goal is to get to at least 100 comments with 100 different womens being celebrated.

I will post a complete list of the 100 women mentioned tomorrow. Hey, if we go over 100, that's cool too! I'll get us started!

ETA 12:30 - You guys are awesome! We are 1/4 of the way to 100. Keep it going!

ETA 4:20 - We are up to 50 women! Halfway there. Thank you to everyone who is participating. I learning lots about my flist and the women they love.

ETA 6:40 - We are up to 82 amazing women. Let's bring pull together the last 18. If you are looking for inspiration, the movie gals are under represented.
