Meeting the legend...and SXSW

Mar 18, 2011 00:46

Went down to Austin on Tuesday for the express purpose of meeting kore_rising during her great journey through the good ol' US of A. She was attending SXSW and I couldn't miss this opporitunity to drop down and welcome her to the States and tell her how awesome she is in person.;)

Got up before dawn*grrr, why does morning have to come so early in the day?!* and made the 4 hour drive, which really isn't that far kore, and arrived in Austin around 10:30. Found parking at a pretty reasonable rate, and then walked a few blocks down 6th street to the rendezvous point at the Starbucks to meet the legend herself who was in her own words "on the right of the door, facing the window with my stuff all spread out." Now directions with that level of specificity are all well and good but what really helped was the barrista's oh-so-helpful writing of kore's name on her cup of soy latte.LOL

So I snuck up on her in classic internetz stalker style and asked if I'd found kore.LOL I'm glad she's not easy to startle, if it had been me things would go flying. I gave her a few "welcome to the former colonies" gifts like a crochet hook to replace the wooden one(ikr, I've never seen one made of wood?)she'd broken on the flight over, some cookies for her muse, Hersheys Hugs for the rest of her stay in America, some Star Wars pins..I'm only sorry I could not locate a squeaky hammer like we'd previously discussed. Will have to find one and ship it to her later.

We settled in for a chat to get to know each other better talked Inception, hitRecord, and fandom in general. Also got interviewed by a web blogger who was interested in how we came to meet so that was surreal but fun.LOL After that we walked down 6th to a TexMex(another bzah?! moment since most who know me are aware of my lack of enthusiasm for the cuisine) retaurant called Chupacabra, Apparently kore is quite taken with burritos(which she enunciates the last vowel of the word in a most adorable way, see I didn't say "cute"!) and talked some more while they apparently grew the produce for kore's burrito and chased down the pig for my pulled pork taco.LOL Ah well, our server Ben was still v.nice and got things right even if they were slow.

Before I forget there were a few rather comical and strange moments during my few hours in Austin. Kore and I were offered "a hit off my duck" by a man of indeterminate age sporting a cute rubber duckie holding his joint. Wow duck-man, thanks for the generosity in offering to share some of your weed, but we had to decline.*eesh* Later as kore and I settled on a bench to talk more in depth on life, the universe and Inception fanfic we witnessed a teenage boy not quite make the stop required to prevent him from colling with the tail end of a car that added insult to injury by running over his foot a bit causing him to fall over.*yeowch! We asked if he was ok and he said he was and proved it by riding his bike on down the street and getting on with his day. Color me impressed.

Last but certainly not least for its ability to stun me into stupid, was the nice young man who walked up literally in the middle of our conversation to tell me he wanted me to have dinner with him. I was completely gob-smacked and stupidly blurted out "I'm not from here"..thank you kore for not laughing and thus making me laugh, he replied he wasn't either but he'd seen me from a ways away and wanted to have dinner with me. I told him "what I'd meant was I'm only here for the day visiting a friend" and thanked him for the compliment of coming over and issuing the invite and wished him better luck with the next lady he asked. He shook my offered hand and went on his way. 0_o Man that totally threw me off!LOL

All in all I enjoyed my visit immensely and was super glad I made the trip. It was delightful to meet kore in person who is every bit as lovely inside and out as you'd expect from her writing.

Kore-sweetie, I hope the rest of your trip is amazing, you deserve it.:D Hope I didn't come off as half the stalkery fan that I am. I can't help your writing is wonderful and I have great recall for things that I had fun reading..I know it prolly threw you a time or two on how well I remembered the little details.LOL So if you hear a strange noise out your window at night, I can assure you it's not me...it might be duck-man though!;P

To everybody else, thanks for tuning in to the ramble.

-Ellie
