Almost got my fingers! Usually raccoons cower in the back of the trap and you've got to prop the door open and leave or stand there for a while trying to get them to come out.
Not today! The way the trap was positioned in the brush I couldn't really get on the side of it so I was opening it from the front. This guy wasn't going to cower in the back. Before I barely had the door open he was charging my fingers and me. I yelled at him as he went through the door and on his way to be sure he would keep going the opposite way. It would be a very rare thing for a coon to actually try and attack a person.
But it definitely makes me wish again that I had the pre-exposure rabies vaccine! My prof had be look it all up once when I first started but then he balked at the cost. Maybe it's time to ask again and hope the project can cover it! Post-exposure shots are 3X as much!
And no cats today! Going to move a bunch of traps tomorrow. I think I've found a good spot! Saw a coyote over there this morning.
